Austin, TX, May 03, 2018 --(PR.com)-- DogsBite.org, a national dog bite victims' group dedicated to reducing serious dog attacks, releases a multi-year U.S. dog bite fatality report. From January 1, 2005 to December 31, 2017, canines killed at least 433 people. The majority of these victims were ages 10 and older. The 9-page report examines over 20 factors involved in fatal dog maulings and key changing metrics since a government body last examined this issue in 2000.
The 13-year report shows that pit bulls contributed to 66% of all dog bite fatalities. Within this period, deaths attributed to pit bulls rose from 58% (2005 to 2010) to 71% (2011 to 2017), a 22% rise. Rottweilers, the second most lethal dog breed, inflicted 10% of attacks resulting in death. This is a decrease from an earlier period (2005 to 2010) when rottweilers inflicted 14% of the total recorded deaths. Together, these two dog breeds accounted for 76% of all deaths.
The 9-page report examines the breeds involved in fatal attacks on humans, age groups and genders of the victims, the number of dogs involved, family and dog relationships, property statistics, household and time factors, criminal prosecutions following fatal dog attacks and states with the most occurrences. The report contains six table charts, including a list of all dog breeds involved, a comparison of two periods within the 13-year period, the rising number of adult victims and the decreasing number of attacks inflicted by a single dog. The tables also show the nine states with the most fatal dog attacks over the period, which states brought the most criminal charges after a fatal dog mauling, and in the case of one state, Illinois, how no criminal charges have been filed since 2005.
I personally think pitbulls should be banned or at least require a licensing or legal permits to own...but two of my closest friends are dog trainers and one specializes in rescuing and training pitbulls.
I doubt that this data is available but consider if pit bulls were 70% of the dog population a 66% bite fatalities would be unremarkable.
And if pit bulls are 3% of the dog population (probably closer to the truth) that statistic is all the more remarkable.
Of the three pit bulls I’ve ever patted, one has killed another dog in the household.
All conservatives should love the idea of common sense dog control laws. They can be dangerous in the wrong hands.
Here’s a list of the 190 most popular dog breeds. Note that pit bulls did not make the list.
On the other hand, Rottweilers, the 2nd most likely breed to kill, is number 8 in popularity.
That pit bulls kill almost 7 times as many people as Rottweilers tells us that pit bulls are far more dangerous.
Pit bulls should be exterminated.

That is a shocking statistic. I had no idea it was that high.
Left out is how many people’s pets have been viciously killed by pit bulls. I no longer go to our park close by because too many passive friendly dogs get killed during the traditional doggie 10 second meet, greet, and move on. It seems once a month someone’s little Jack Russell gets killed.
I have no interest in arguing for or against them here, but that is not really valid as it’s based entirely on AKC registration statistics.
“Pit bull” is not an actual breed and therefore unregistrable, unlike Rotts and other “real” AKC recognized breeds.
There is no feasible means of actually counting them, as they are mostly bred by backyard breeders are never registered like “real” breeds.
In my area, you are more likely to encounter someone walking a pit bull than all other breeds, combined.

Although there are no accurate or even near accurate census records for dogs in the U.S., in some populations pit bulls are estimated to comprise some 30-40% of the dog population, making it a very popular breed.
Considering that there were an estimated 53,000,000 dogs in the U.S., and assuming that pit bulls make up 10% of that population, there would be approximately 5.3 million pit bulls in our society.
In 2000, 13 pit bulls were involved in 8 fatal attacks.
That is roughly ONE dog out of 204,000 - or .000385 percent of the pit bull population.
Again, this is for information regarding the sheer numerical prevalence of them being kept as pets in the US.
A certain “religious group” has been poisoning dogs in parks and other places by leaving adulterated food and toys lying around.
I don’t take any of my dogs to any public place that I cannot see *everything* on the ground, at all times.
That “religious group” despises dogs and take great joy in murdering them.
That utterly pales the other common threats of dog parks, like attacks and diseases.
There are many who agree. I am as yet undecided on a solution, but influencing the CDC to resume the recording of dog injuries by breed should be resumed immediately, as a matter of accurate statistics regarding public safety.

I’ve seen estimates that dogs called pit bulls by folks concerned with this is pits are one third to two thirds of all dogs
That includes a lot of mutts called pits with blocky heads and snots and red or blue noses and maybe a Nipper eye patch
They are labs and chihuahuas are the top three certified breeds....and two of those three aren’t known for injury bites though chihuahuas would be stone cold killers if big enough.....God love em...

A friend of my wife oddly was hospitalized this week in Green Hills Nashville from a Labrador retriever bite...the dog off lead in a posh zip code attacked her cat and she dove in....dog is in quarantine and she had stitches

Rotts going down in attacks is due to them being less popular than before
Neither my Rotts or my Scott bulldog nor my daughters pit has attacked anyone this week but hey it’s only Monday night

If you just want quick-and-easy projections, four years’ worth of data, 2013 through 2016, indicates that on average:
About 31,500 dogs per year kill or severely injure other animals, including about 27,500 pit bulls (87%).
About 10,000 dogs per year are killed by other dogs, 85% of them killed by pit bulls.
About 11,500 dogs per year are disabled or disfigured by other dogs, 10,500 of them disabled or disfigured by pit bulls (92%).
About 2,500 cats per year are killed by dogs, about 2,000 of them (80%) killed by pit bulls.
About 7,500 hoofed animals, poultry, and wildlife per year are killed by dogs, about 6,400 of them (85%) by pit bulls.
The 2016 numbers appear to have been significantly higher.

My 150 pound black faced Rott in Upper Nyack NY while on lead with me was attacked by a 100 pound plus mixed shepherd/bully something out of the blue
Becket my dog was under threat of life so I released him as is proper ...when attacked by a large male dog or human with a weapon and quickly tore open the other dogs throat requiring later euthanasia which of course is sad and nauseating when witnessed but his dog was off lead and fancy upper nyack had laws
Cops came and told the man he was at fault
I offered to help with euthanasia but he told me to eff myself and called me a redneck.....I felt sorry for him
That same Rott saved girlfriends life in Gainesville
