The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.
From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed any time-and don't have to be about gardening.
We certainly are blessed, and try to make good use of what the Lord of all has graciously given us to enjoy and share (and being able to share is a blessing).
Getting into the science of gardening and soil (which really should be tested well), which I am still a novice at, and you realize how interdependent God has made it all, but with man being the ultimate object of its fruit. It will produce more with our car, but would flourish without it.
But you also will find that aside from basics (if that!), just as there are a myriad of competing claims for human health products and the basis for them, so also you have such in the gardening realm. Till vs, no till. Lime for acid soil or some fish product. Etc. As for us, if the city would give us a permit for a cow...!
But plants want to live. Before we moved from the other side of the hill then we have zero yard, but grew tomatoes in old recycle and storage bins on the roof (with the LL permission), 2 or 3 to each, with just "city dirt." Ran a hose from the cellar to the roof. They produces fairly well but petered out rather quickly. Yet there was a world of difference btwn the cherry toms that they produces vs., the store toms! Thanks be to God for such, and for taste buds (and smell: try tasting food while holding your nose).
Not sure about Missouri but here in my part of Va it has been a cool wet year so far.
Lots of rain and just a few scattered days of high temps and humidity.
Today it’s so cloudy and cool I have to wear a jacket outside.
Usually by this time of year we have begun the run up to full summer temps.
So far every time the tomato and pepper plants start to flower we get a couple of cool rainy days and they get a growth spurt instead of setting fruit.
I haven’t had to water them but twice in the last 3 weeks.
I don’t care, I just love growing stuff.

Yes, we were there every week and more often if he needed something. We prayed with him a day before he died.
We have had more rain so far this year, and cooler temps too. While we did have a few days of really hot weather, overall really is cooler.
I’m thinking that next year may be similar-all the volcanoes might be contributing to some cooling too.

Indeed, thanks be to God. I forgot to add that I only give the plants about a gallon of water each week (about 1/2 gallon twice a week) if it does not rain much. When i plant from cups or containers I usually cut the bottom out of the container, and after watering I put it over the plant twist the container into the soil. Sometime i place a rock or so on each side to keep the wind from blowing it over. And then i water the cup, besides in the trench the plant is placed it.
Also, this year a kid gave me an old soccer net made out of PCV pipe, and which was basically unusable. So u cut the pipes in about 2' sections (no long enough) and drove them into the soil near the plant, as a cheap way to get water to the roots. Later i have been cutting the bottoms out of juice and milk containers and putting the top into the pipes, as a kind of tank.
I would like to put to use some long metal pipes a neighbor was throwing out which he gave me, and a 12v water pump I bought cheap.
It’s heated up here. Got a 4X4 block of corn in, with Kentucky Wonders interspersed in it, and surrounding it. Also planted a short row (1 pkt) of yellow wax beans. Hoping frost holds off long enough to harvest.
Things got complicated by taking the wife to the hospital yesterday. She’ll be there 2 or 3 more days: kidney stone moving around inside the kidney; a minor liver problem; arrhythmias; blood pressure sky high; lots of severe pain; ca’t hardly keep food down.
Mostly controlled & stabilized on meds by this evening, but not nearly ready to send home.
Good thing I learned early how to cook & clean.
Another cool cloudy day here in Va.
Yesterday was the same only with light drizzles throughout the day.
The grass has been wet for almost a week. We have had exceptionally heavy dews as well.
I haven’t checked but we might be having a La Nina year.
IIRC the La Nina brings cooler wetter weather while El Nino bakes to a crisp.
So many variables.
I did grocery store garlic because the home improvement warehouse store wanted 2.99 for TWO CLOVES of elephant garlic.
Um no not in this lifetime!
It has been 100 degrees here all week. That is summer Texas.
It got all the way up to 66 degrees here yesterday Marcella...
BTW... The record high for June 28 was 71 degrees set about 30 years ago
