WEEKLY GARDEN THREAD FOR 6/22/2016 DELAYED
freerepublic | 6/23/2018 | greeneyes

Posted on 06/23/2018 11:00:08 AM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed any time-and don't have to be about gardening.

Glad to hear it. Did you give them a big heap of praise and/or take them to the DQ for a treat? Kids are capable of rising to the occasion, but too often don’t get that chance in today’s world.

I had to move my lemon tree recently to a more protected location due to strong winds. I keep it on a plastic dolly so it’s easy to do. It’s time to give it a dose of nutrition, I think.

Hey that’s good news. When hubby finishes the patio, the next project is a storage shed built at the opposite end of the patio where the greenhouse is located-storage of outdoor patio furniture and rakes etc.

I’m glad to hear you and your garden are still perking along. The heat is here in Texas tho we did get a couple inches of rain Tuesday. Filled up the rain barrels. Despite the heat I’m still getting a handfull of cherry tomatoes every day. These were the only ones not drowned by my mom-in-law’s “helpful” overwatering. I had claimed a new spot for plants out behind our garage where hubby pulled up an old rock patio. Soil looked terrible but i put some squash seeds out anyway and those 2 tomatoes. Flourishing! I’ve decided a fall garden will be coming soon back there.

My lemon tree is looking horrible this year. I’m also attributing it to moving in and out of the winds. Twice I’ve been away from home and it got stuck out in horrible gust storms. Shortly after the first it dropped this years lemons :( Looks better now but I’ve moved it into a more sheltered spot that’s too shady. No better spot at present.

Thank you, tubebender.
We planted the seeds thinking they would be traditional, thick walled peppers but these were the result.
They're not spicy. We made a casserole dish (plus an extra casserole set aside in the freezer, with a hamburger/rice/tomato sauce mix.

Yum !

Sounds good. I’m going to treat my soil with some peat and compost-when hubby prepped for the patio pavers, he took all the top soil/grass and throwed it into my new raised bed-but it has too much clay.

We have an ongoing battle over the type of soil. I like the mel’s mix/potting mix type of soil. He doesn’t because it drys out quickly.

That’s why I like it - almost impossible to over water, which is my tendency.

Mine dropped the lemons too. No blooms since then - getting some healthy leaves back, so it will take a while I think.

If you figure it out, please let me know. I didn’t have great luck this year with those.

I don’t have a contractor - I have hubby. Communication is not a strong point. I take what I can get. LOL

My mom loved that pool. She always loved the water. But a pool is a big pain in the pocketbook and on one’s time. Standing out in the sun vacuuming out the pool, making sure the water is balanced, skimming leaves off the top and pulling creepy crawlies out of the pool is not my idea of a good time.

I was thinking about closing the whole thing down but it’s expensive to do that too. Pools are really for people who can pay people to do the work and who have an unlimited income. It’s not a middle class endeavor. But that’s just my two cents. Other people may feel differently.

Yes, our lemons sound alike. The leaves on mine have come back nicely but there are only about half as many as previous years. I think its helped mine that the location I’ve finally left it is on the edge of paving stones hubby laid for an outdoor shower. We both like to clean up outside after yard work and the best private nook is in a corner of retaining wall. He dug out a foot of soil, filled with sand then laid paving stones to a back door. Since sheltering from wind meant shade I figured the best I could do was give it the humidity of the shower plus evaporative humidity from the sand beneath. It still gets about 5 hours sun/day but in previous years I really enjoyed having something so lovely that thrived on our hot, southwest facing deck.

Sudden heat wave.

New green bean transplants.

Okra seedlings.

Carnage.

:(

I harvested garlic too. I planted some good size grocery store cloves back in October. I have a couple dozen very good sized heads now going to cure for a week.

I didn’t do very many. I wanted to see if I could even grow it first.

Was over 100 in partial shade here. Interwebs say 96.
That temperature must be from the waterfront.

We’ve been all over the map, some days in the high 60s; others low 100s. Also got 4 inches+ of rain in the past week; more tomorrow and Monday.

Too much to do; not enough getting done.

I have 2 6-packs of Roma tomatoes waiting to go in; MAYBE tomorrow, if I can beat the rain. Also, green & wax bean, and corn seeds I’ve had to keep waiting on since I bought them.

Onions are doing quite well; the garlic is spotty, some nice bulbs, others microcosmic. Best shallots I’ve ever had, already; if they keep going the way they have been, they’ll be huge.

Second planting of Yukon Golds, in a totally different area, is just as bad as the first one, at 35-40% emergence; but, the German Butterballs have all fairly leapt out ot the ground, each with multiple stems.

Snow peas will need to be picked this coming week.
