A Bahama Breeze Island Grille in Cleveland faces claims of racial profiling after police were called during a gathering of African-American women at the Caribbean-themed eatery owned by Darden Restaurants.
Chante Spencer, among some 40 members of Delta Sigma Theta at the restaurant, told Cleveland.com the problems started when one woman frustrated with waiting for her bill for 25 minutes said she was going to leave. A restaurant employee called police even as the woman waited and paid her tab because the manager wanted officers to be there to ensure other members of the gathering covered their bills, Spencer told the local media outlet on Wednesday.
The sorority gathering included a doctor, a judge, educators and other professionals who became upset because they believed the manager targeted them because of their skin color, Spencer said of the incident Tuesday night. "Police were standing there to make sure everyone paid, which we felt was racial profiling," she told Cleveland.com, saying she was speaking as a patron not on behalf of the sorority.
The police report states that all bills were paid and that a member of the group told police when they arrived that she would make sure the tabs were covered, according to Cleveland.com. Police did not make any arrests but remained at the restaurant about one hour.

It was because they were a large party threatening to leave the restaurant without paying the bill.
Any large party threatening to leave a restaurant without paying the bill will get the police called on them. Race has nothing to do with it.
These idiots think they can get a bill quickly with a large party? Obviously theyve never done it before, worked as waitresses, and they think its the same as if they are by themselves.
Feel sorry for the rest and Bahama Breeze did the correct thing. I think they are just trying to get a payday here.
As would your wait staff that there were no tips
Never trust a herd of ghettopotami.
I still have nightmares about guests from 89. I wake myself up frantically searching for the coffee pot, or someones check, which in my dream I forgot to drop off.
All in today’s news - blacks shouldn’t have the cops called on them when they don’t want to pay their restaurant bill, blacks can sue for $250k when they are acting fools at cops and trespassing in a private pool, and cops aren’t supposed to arrest blacks for smoking pot on public streets or any other misdemeanor crimes.
Why is everybody always picking on me?
I laughed, because that is what the (all black) Atlanta city govt did to get rid of Freaknik back in the 90s. They closed off highway exits to major surface streets, and dispersed visiting motorists onto secondary streets that didnt lead directly to any of the hot gathering spots. This was before auto nav systems, of course, lol. Guess map reading is a white thing.
My wifes restaurant gets hit with hundreds of these groups during “black college reunion” week(s) ... they get loud and disruptive , demanding and never tip ... there is a reason why different groups gain reputations.
Until I read the article, I thought 'Darden Owned Restaurant' was politically correct journalistic code for 'Red Lobster'.
I think separate checks should be the rule. If customers want to pay multiple that should be handled afterwards. More bills have been screwed up by trying to mix and match who goes on what checks than anything else. Although that would make an interesting way to mix couples at a swingers party: go home with whoever the waitress paired you with.
LOL. Id read that Freaknik finally got shut down-if what we experienced here was bad, that must have been a nightmare. It finally just kind of petered out here, because they didnt get the big backlash they were looking for-everyone just pretty much stayed home after the first year (the worst year), the police were vigilant but not oppressive about towing cars, etc, and we just showed that we didnt give a damn, that wed endure until they left, and they always have to leave. So, not being some young peoples hotspot exactly, they just stayed away in larger and larger numbers every year until now its more like a local family reunion, though a large one, than some wild party. Dont give them the attention, they look elsewhere.
Do you think the sisters made it clear before ordering that they would require separate checks? If not, no wonder there was a long wait. Think what the servers had to do to create accurate checks for each person.
They were tired of the incessant shoplifting and mayhem.
Of COURSE they were accused of racism.
But what would you do if you owned a store, and KNEW you'd lose money to theft?
The store owners were left with a lose-lose situation.
You obviously have never waited on tables or run a kitchen.......
You mean black people skip out on paying restaurant bills?
I’m shocked...just shocked.
Did they take tips off of adjacent tables as usual?
It sounds like these weren’t just college students - they were sorority members, yes, but in the workforce already.

Forty Sheila Jackson Lee’s, age 20 and drunk.
Every restaurateur’s dream...
The biggest problem was they created gridlock by cruising and basically just stopping their cars in the street and partying. Plenty of stories of weddings being cancelled and ambulances being unable to move the first two years, because, pre-internet, there just wasnt any warning. The first year it was big, we had some folks come in, but they werent gonna pay $4 for apint of English beer. I remember one fellow though ask for a gin and juice, I asked what kind of juice and he said, I dunno, man, gin AND JUICE! I think that was the title of a Snoop Dog song popular at the time.
40 twenty something, liquored up, Shiela Jackson Lee's".
I don't think there is any event in history, past, present, or future, that could be more horriffic?
