Overweight office workers could be allowed to miss the rush hour commute, ask for a larger chair or work from home.
Workers who are overweight should be allowed to turn up later to work, according to a government adviser.
Leading employment specialist Stephen Bevan is to pitch a new plan to protect obese people under discrimination law, reports the Mirror.
This could allow overweight office workers to miss the rush hour commute, ask for a larger chair or work from home.
Professor Bevan, who is a member of Public Health England's advisory board and has advised the Department of Work and Pensions, will suggest the changes at the European Congress on Obesity in Vienna.
Research has recently revealed people from Britain are the most prejudiced towards overweight people in Europe.
And now Professor Bevan will advise 2,000 medics that obesity should be classed as a "protected characteristic" - allowing workers to sue bosses who fat shame them.
We need to coordinate our efforts so that people who want to work can do so," he said.
It can be working time, it can be having a bit of understanding that someone might need to turn up at 10am because they have trouble with transport or anxiety about transport.
Some people say that obesity is the last characteristic that its still socially acceptable to make fun of.
We have a scheme in the UK called Access to Work which not many employers know about.
If you are an individual living with a health condition or an impairment you can get support, paid for by the Government to make accommodations.
It could be transport or it could be working from home.

Speaking as a somewhat large man...
This is amazingly stupid.
No, they should not, and promoting same is merely to encourage another line for the victimhood cliff jump.
Let me see, if I’m employed and use McDonalds every day for lunch, I can join the special “entitled” category of “obese workers” and continue to be the slacker I am without consequence. Let’s see, Which is easier; to eat healthy and get enough physical activity, or get fat? Getting obese seems the sensible thing to do. /s

I’m overweight and think this is stupid. The last thing the world needs is another protected class. Why don’t we instead get rid of all protected classes?

Sure...because the government worker won’t be out one penny for it.
This would be amusing if tested by an athletic person. A lot of very muscular people are technically “obese”. They may have extremely low levels of body fat, but they pack on so much muscle that, for their height, their weight is higher than the standardized medical charts are expecting. So, they are obese.
And I guess they can spend more time at the gym and show up for work later.
LOL
Who will be the last normal, unprotected person?
The answer is probably lurking in your mirror.
Take a peek!
I think that’s called anorexia.
Which is a disability, so come in whenever you want.
How about having them show up early, to beat the rush?
Office conversation:
“Hi Joanie, how’s it going?”
“Oh, hi Mary. Not bad. I just got back from the company health fair. If I pack on 17 more pounds I can start coming in an hour later.”
“Cool, it’s good to have life goals.”
“Thanks, pass me the Twinkies.”
Anyone know where to buy lead underwear? If this happens 90 percent of employees will magically become overweight.
If a nice looking lady turns down date with a fat guy can he sue her?
You could turn this around and make
them show up for work 2 hours early,
thereby getting ahead of the rush
hour commute. Some I’ve worked with
would become overweight on purpose,
just so they can stay in bed 2 extra
hours. Overweight (brought on by sloth
choices) people should not be treated
any different than any other employee.
Minorities should be allowed to take Mondays off as a mental health day due to weekend shootings.
Whites should work 12 hours on Mondays to make up for minority coworkers’ absences.
Strange coming from the UK. People seem to be weight obsessed. People will comment in a passive aggressive way if you are overweight and buy something fatty at a store or food shop. I guess it depends on the region of the country.
As I currently hold the record as the world’s skinniest fat guy, I don’t know how I feel about this.
LOL. I am in a chatroom for stock trading with a very highly skilled programmer guy who has this issue where he works which is let’s just say an extremely well known company known for animated animals. Sometimes he comes up descriptions that have me rolling on the floor laughing, sometimes it’s every day, on a fairly precise schedule. I guess I’m just glad it’s him.
