He’s far from being the only LEO involved in the drug trade. Back in the day I had a friend that was busted for growing about 100 lbs of weed. While he was incarcerated he’d get the sheriff’s deputies regularly asking him questions about growing tips/techniques when their own plants weren’t doing well.
