Toxic Fandom Is Killing 'Star Wars'
Hollywood Reporter ^ | June 11, 2018 | Marc Bernadin

Posted on 06/11/2018 8:21:36 PM PDT by EdnaMode

Racist harassment of 'Last Jedi' star Kelly Marie Tran and the 'Solo' backlash: Lucasfilm’s problem isn’t the movies, it’s trolls who want only the nostalgia of their youth, like "old Luke Skywalker hiding on an island from everything new," writes columnist Marc Bernardin.

Fandom has always been an us versus them proposition. In the early days, it was because you loved something that the world at large found silly, be it comic books or Doctor Who. It was you and those who felt like you, against everyone else. Star Wars redefined fandom because it built a bigger tent than had ever existed before. Suddenly, the "everyone else" also loved Star Wars. Your mom knew what The Force was. Mark Hamill was on The Tonight Show. There was Yoda underwear. It was the first real “fan” thing that exploded into a phenomenon. But fandom always needs a “them.”

Star Wars is in an interesting place right now. The most recent film, Solo: A Star Wars Story, has been drastically underperforming at the box office. After two weeks in release, it had pulled in a mere $271 million worldwide. Analysts believe Disney will lose $50 million or more on the film, and Solo comes on the heels of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which — despite making $1.3 billion worldwide — proved itself an incredibly divisive film. While critics loved it (judging by the 91 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes), fans were split.

Some loved the bold liberties of writer-director Rian Johnson. They understood that there was room under that big tent for characters like Vice Admiral Holdo (Laura Dern) and Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran), women placed alongside Carrie Fisher’s Leia and Ridley’s Rey at the center of the Star Wars drama.

I haven’t seen Solo, but from what I hear it’s not a bad movie.

It’s the “haven’t seen it” from people who’ve seen everything else that is killing them.

“Imagine a gender neutral ‘Romeo and Juliet”
If Disney were to do it, it would “Romeo and Julius”.

Me too! Lol. A new hope is my favorite. Rogue one, and empire tie for second. Solo and the Return of the Jedi come next.
I almost didn’t go see it because of some comments I’ve read on the net. I only saw one commercial for it on tv. There was no excitement for it. I didn’t even know Woody Harrelson was in it. He did a great job. Lando was played great. It took a while to accept solo, but he did pretty good. As far as the story, I liked it a bunch... It was really about how Han, Chewy, and Lando met.

I hope that Rian Johnson totally destroys Star Wars and takes Disney/ESPN/ABC with it.

I loved Star Wars, but it was already ruined by the Ewoks and the prequels.

Rian Johnson dug the franchise an even deeper grave.

I'm hoping that a few years from now the average person will not know the answer to the question "What is Star Wars?" and that no one will go to Disneyland or Disneyworld specifically to see Star Wars Land or whatever they heck they are calling it.

Rian Johnson brought us Looper which was a hoot. If he destroys Disney then he should be promoted for sainthood.

Yes media and Lucasfilm. Please continue attacking the fans. That worked out well for Han Solo.

Really most of the big Star Wars fans were already not liking Star Wars - Disney's deleting of all the SW Universe to make way for their story just ruined it for a lot of people. Saying 75% of the SW world is now gone, just doesn't work.

A Boy and His Dog (1975)
Don Johnson roams around with his telepathic dog after WWIII. Based on the short story by Harlan Ellison.
He’s loner with a great dog and he finds a gal.

I don’t remember if it’s in the movie but the best line in the book is “A boy loves his dog.” I guess I’ll have to dig out the movie and have another watch.

Yep, these “one-offs” are turning out way better than the “episode” movies. Sad to say.

Go see it. You won't be disappointed. Great backstory of how Han first got his name Solo, and then how he hooked up with Chewie.

Admittedly I went in with low expectations (Woody Harrelson), but he and everyone else did a great job.

Today’s folks do not understand what made Star Wars such a success. They are not George Lucas.

I don't think Lucas knew either. Watch a video called "How Star Wars was saved in the edit" on youtube to see what a mess he made and how the editors (his wife among them) cut the boring crap, made up new stuff, changed the order of everything, etc. And made it good.

I have read much SF (and am writing one).

Mote is one of the best. Niven alone is very clever, but with Pournelle has gravitas.

Re: “Harrison Ford was so iconic that they really needed to (and didn’t) find a really good actor to be the Young Solo.”

That's a really good point.

The moment I read your Comment, I thought about the young Robert De Niro playing the young Vito Corleone.

If Disney had found someone near De Niro’s level to play Solo, they would have created a completely new film franchise for decades to come.

Oh i should say it’s not a terrible movie. They missed some opportunities with casting. That would have veen easy and then the film would have had a classic appeal

The actual game looks pretty good though.
I’ll wait for the player reviews before deciding to buy it.
EA and DICE really f’ed me over with BF3.

BF:2142 is one of my favorite games, put something like 2,000 hours into it over the years.

Football fandom with people spending thousands and dressing in sports jersey costumes and face painting and obsessing over paying to get a photo with their star is perfectly rational. < /s >

The author is an idiot.

Before Star Wars there was James Bond, The Beatles, The Twist, Davy Crockett, and Elvis.
