Insular Hasidic Jews struggle to preserve customs as legal and social pressures build

It is, by choice, an intensely isolated and insular group, in which a brood of 10 children in one Hasidic Jewish family doesn’t raise an eyebrow.

The big family units help explain why some communities they inhabit become among the poorest in the country, according to federal statistics on rates of welfare assistance, subsidized housing, food stamps and Medicaid.

Indeed, the U.S. town with the highest rate of people on food stamps is the all-Hasidic New York village of New Square, north of New York City, where 77 percent of residents rely on the program to eat, according to a new report.

I grew up in Rockland County, NY where many of these Hasidic enclaves are. Sucks to be a Gentile or non-religious Jew if you happen to live in a area where the Hasidic gain control over the schools and gov't. The dirty secret is taxpayers are subsidizing these communities through the welfare state and special education. This community went from say an oddity to now a major point of tension due to their rapid growth.

You prefer lunatic "non-religious Jews?" Like the so-called "official leaders of the American Jewish community?"

What do they do at the schools . . . kick evolution out?

Apparently “Work” is not in their vocabulary.

The OP implied the Chasidim have a negative impact on schools they control. I was wondering if refusing to teach evolution is one of them?

I know lately there's been a huge dust-up in NYC about Charedim not wanting their schools to be forced to teach things contrary to their religion to their students. And the rest of society reacted the same way they react to "rednecks" who say the same thing.

Children of Hasidic families do not attend public schools. Despite that they take control of school boards to shift resources to their own community Yeshivas mostly to finance special needs kids of which there is a large number of in the Hasidic community due to inbreeding.

Drive through Lakewood, 99% of the storefronts and signs are in Hebrew. Very creepy town, outsiders are definitely not welcome.

“What do they do at the schools . . . kick evolution out? “

Make you bend to their religious rules.

My wife had to deal with them in textiles and described them as “unlikable”. They despised dealing with mere women.

I went and looked for what's going on. Found This article about an ultra-orthodox-dominated district in NY.

Apparently, the ultra-orthodox politically control the school district, cut budgets to keep property taxes low (the orthodox send their kids to Yeshivas) and much of the "special needs education" funding goes to jewish kids in Yeshivas. Now, whether the kids are really special needs, or just claim to be special needs (with their special needs only being addressable in the Yeshiva schools) is another story.

Or practiced community gardening or farming. Upstate New York at one time was dotted with Jewish dairy farms.

However, it may be like here in Maryland (where most of the dairy farmers are not Jewish), where Big Dairy and state regulations are driving many family-run dairies out of business.

The article explained why that is. It helps to read the article before commenting.

Hey C19 - former North Rocklander here, my family was from Spring Valley. I don’t care who I piss off with my commentary.

My uncle lived across from one of their schools; I was parked outside his house on a Saturday, and one of their buses -while pulling out of their parking lot - totaled my car. Cops didn’t give a S#!t. Driver was underage, uninsured. They promised me to fix everything. Guess what? Yeah, bupkis.

Now, they’re taking over several hundred acres in Monroe-Woodbury. They run illegal schools and drive down property values wherever they make their nests. And I guess they pay off local officials because nobody bats an eye.

As for their welfare fraud, I have it on very good authority that a lot of these guys run drugs and hookers from NYC and Jersey.

I don’t care if they’re Jewish, my grandmother was Jewish. This sect makes bad neighbors, shady businessman, and they destroy property values.

Anytime you have an insular community that does not give a crap about outsiders once have enough number they will destroy the neighborhood for non-members. It can Hasidic Jews, Muslims with the women in burqas, linguistic enclaves, or Hare Krishnas.

The problem is the availability of welfare.

The problem is the availability of welfare.

And other government money, which can be controlled once you have a "critical mass" of your own people.

If welfare, and other government money, was unavailable, then people would have to work, and in so doing would have an incentive to get along with all the people you need to get along with in order to work real jobs.

I don’t know much about their local politics, but Orthodox Jews, including Hasidic, tend to vote more conservatively, especially on family values, in national elections.
