I knew a few folks who had landed on D-Day. It's hard to believe that it was so long ago.

I once had a retired Army Lt Col as a supervisor. He was a 2nd Lt Graves Registration Officer on D Day. A friend of mine’s father was an Army Chaplain on D Day. You don’t want to know the stories these men told.

While assigned to HQ EUCOM, I did a TDY to the 45th Anniversary of D-Day in 1989. It was a fascinating week.

I think we all know intellectually but unless experienced first hand there is no true comprehension. Hence PTSD and all it’s historic forbearers.

I’ve read that this year’s Normandy ceremonies will be relatively low-key. But much more is planned for next year, as it’s a major anniversary. Trump should be there, for sure.

My dad was infantry with Patton’s Third Army...
He never talked about what he saw or did...until...
When I came home from Vietnam, he and went to a quiet place, had some beers and talked about friends we left behind....and cried...
We never talked about it anymore...

One of my favourite speeches from President Reagan has to be the one he gave at the 1984 commemoration of the 40th anniversary.
