SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) - Longtime Padres play-by-play announcer and former KFMB Stations sports anchor Ted Leitner will be leaving the broadcast booth to fight kidney cancer.
Leitner announced on his Twitter account that he has cancer, "and will be off the Padres broadcast indefinitely after Wednesdays game."
He thanked his fans for their support over the years.
Have always tried to be honest with the radio & TV audience. So will do that now also: I have cancer-and will be off the #Padres broadcast indefinitely after Wednesdays game. Thank you Padres fans and #aztecfamily for all your support all these wonderful years.

Too bad about cancer. Hope he recovers. Bad announcer. Talks in staccato. Never tells score.
He was always a disc jockey doing sports. His style never caught fire like Jerry Coleman, Dave Campbell, or Rick Monday. He was never as personable either. Best wishes to him. He’s up in years.
Back in the 80s, when Leitner was doing the evening news, he stopped covering the Padres altogether, and started covering all the former Padres that were doing well somewhere else.
I wish him well.
yes, hope it goes well for him; hard to understand why he is in the booth, very poor announcer.
I remember when Leitner came to San Diego. Does anybody remember Al Schuss?
Leitner used to be a sportscaster on one of the TV channels down there when I was going to college at UCSD in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. The Padres were “my Padres” when they won and “your Padres” when they lost lol. I had no idea he was now the voice of the Padres. Best wishes to Ted - I hope he recovers and does well.
If it hasn’t spread to other parts of his body, his prognosis should be pretty good. If it has spread to other major organs, that makes it much tougher.
The voice of Aztec football.
Prayers for his health and healing.
Lived in San Diego back in the `80s. Used to love to watch Ted do the sports on the evening news. If they lost it was “Your Padres/Chargers/Sockers lost tonight”, if they won it was “MY Padres, Chargers/Sockers won tonight”. Always tongue in cheek.
God bless you Ted. Praying for your recovery.
Do not remember Schuss, who was he? I do remember the event that was Ryan Leaf and Ted going after him all the time. Outside of Leaf’s house once.
A voice I miss for the Padres....Tony Gwynn. Loved his laugh.
We left Cali years ago and cannot see or hear Padre games anymore unless I get the Dtv baseball package.
I remember that..your Padres when they lost. They lost many times the years I was able to watch. No way they were going to beat the Yankee that year. Although that umpire got that call wrong and we may have won that game.
He did play-by-play radio broadcasts of the minor league Padres. He also would do recreations of away games, including simulating the crack of the bat.
I lived in SD for 3 years when I was a kid (late 70s). Lovable Leitner is the only person I remember from SD TV.
Thank you for that info.
Do you get OAN tv? The Ledger report is Graham Ledger he used to be on KFMB back in the day. Only 2 I remember from SD TV.
