The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed any time-and don't have to be about gardening.

Beautiful spirea. I’ve got a spirea bonsai. Decided to try one years ago, just happened to find a gallon pot and it has a main trunk. I’ll get a picture when it blooms.

We are trying to cut down on grains too. I’ve read tons in the last 20 years on dietary truth and taking out grain carbs has resulted in a lot fewer digestive problems and weight loss. I still bake bread in winter just because it’s a habit i love. I’ve just cut down from 4-6 big loaves/batch to 2 small ones. One is for us, one to give away. This past winter our dogs got half or more of every little loaf but they like those treats too. Hubby ate 2 slices fresh from oven and I had one. But I enjoy my bread baking so much I haven’t stopped.

As a kid there were family situations where I’d go live with Grama. She was my safe space. And she made bread, no recipe, just the way her mom and grandma made it, every Sunday. When I bought that old farmhouse I described in an earlier post the only heat source was propane space heaters. The only heat in the kitchen was the stove and it would be cold cold on winter mornings as that old farmhouse had no insulation at all. My Grama was the one who pointed out that those days I should bake bread. Now days, I think it’s a therapy. I’d rather bake it than eat it so I just do it and give it away or feed the part left from our first 3 slices to the dogs. They give me lots of lovin for it too.

My first son-in-law keeps offering to buy/trying to convince me to use a bread machine. LOL it would just not be my therapy that way. A lot of prayer goes into making that bread. It’s the same connection I get working in my garden. Over the years as I learned more about nutrition I’ve adjusted and used healthier grains but nowdays the no-grain diet has just left me with an exercise I love that is mostly gifts to others.

Speaking of the sorghum, your plan to make some sounds heavenly! When the mood strikes I use the bread dough for sweet rolls. I don’t have much of a sweet tooth but love cinnamon. I mix in a bunch of cinnamon to the dough, pinch small pieces of dough and drop in melted butter before setting them in a baking pan then pour a mix of butter and sorghum molasses over the top. I’ve always had to make just a tiny pan of that because everyone else wants a different sweetner and more sweet. But it’s just right for me about once/year and lucious with coffee on frigid mornings.

That is an amazing price, when I first discovered DOP tomatoes I would pay about $7-9 dollars a can! $5.99 would be cheap. This price is amazing. I think the fact that it now says certified instead of DOP means it will be kept secret a while longer :-)

I love the curbside service of ordering from Walmart as well. I got a whole bunch of swiffer pads on sale, you can even get sale prices online! And their return policy is amazing. If you just change your mind they will pay return shipping. And of course you can always take it to the store. I like that option because I feel less guilty if I just change my mind. I don’t want them to have to pay for shipping.

doesn’t ice feel great? i can just feel the inflammation subsiding, lol! it’s not as great in the winter, but i still use it!

you must live somewhere warm, to have tomatoes already? i got my peppers started late, Many of the seeds didn’t germinate with the first planting. But now I have a whole bunch coming up, so another couple weeks and I think I can plant them. I love to freeze the peppers, that way I have a ready source the whole rest of the year.

My youngest daughter has used the WalMart shipping for her household for a long time. She’s recommended it to me and now I think you have me convinced to try it. I detest shopping and generally just make a huge Walmart trip every other month but it might be nice to just have my list delivered every couple of weeks. It’s an hour drive for me to go to WM anyway. Free shipping would save on fuel and time!

i thought being rural, i’d find kids with a work ethic. who knew?

$25 an hour for house cleaning and they still didn’t want to do it? This country is going to hell in a handbasket quick. If we have an economic depression, these people won’t know how to work. i think this area has become too dependent on government handouts.

Yes, I’m in the warm. Central Texas. I didn’t get seeds up this year due to life interfering with routine so bought plants. With the crazy freezes we had this spring I grabbed them on a trip to the hardware store on a weekend they were trying to get them all in before a norther hit. They were happy to get rid of a dozen for half price! And it was early sales season so I was able to find pots with 2 or 3 plants in all. We have a sunroom that has an anti-freeze heater so it keeps the area above freezing and the room is all windows except one side.

I like the small bottles of Welch’s grape juice. I can get 2 or 3 in an order plus other things I use regularly and fedex shows up. So easy.

I agree! It's pitiful!

If you live close enough we still have to paint that garage :) The whole rent house prep for sale is what's messed up my gardening this year. We've taken this weekend off but have spent most free weekends working on that for 5 months. If we were younger it would have been knocked out and sold already.

Oh, I am jealous. We have never been able to grow melons after the first year. Always the vines die from some bacterial wilt or something before they mature.
