I was working the seafood counter at about this time, last year and a nice woman with a cute little blonde-headed daughter came up. I remarked on how cute she was. In a “proper British” accent she replied, “Thank you. Can I get about one pound of Cod?”

Not immediately knowing the conversion factor for pounds to stone, I replied, “I notice your accent, what part of Great Britain are you from (she frowned at my terminal preposition!)”?

She said, “I grew up in South Africa, married a yank and moved here.”

I looked at her daughter and smiled. Her mother chuckled and said, “Yes...she’s an African-American.” Laughs all around!
