Used to hike a lot in the North Bend area when I lived in Seattle. It's beautiful, nice trails maintained by volunteer crews; one I was in nearly killed a couple of mountain bikers who decided to race down the trail we were working. Lots of wildlife, which means lots of food for predators. Lots of tracks.

You can get sucked into a false sense of security when you pull up to a nicely graded parking area next to a well-marked trailhead with power and running water and these days, even cell phone connectivity. It isn't the city, and you aren't safe there, or rather, you're as safe as you want to make yourself. If you don't, you aren't.

Why would the Cascades need grizzlies? In Alaska, women carry magnums with them as they go out to pick their laundry off a line.

Maybe it is because they want less people "invading" the forest.

Alabama had over 400 murders in 2016 and you fly an Alabama flag.
Human natures says you take your chances in options you make.

“All that in the wilds of DuPage!”

I see them strolling down the middle of my block here from time to time. I’m not far from Wheaton. And if I remember correctly the Chicago PD shot a mountain lion on the NW side of Chicago a few years back.

We don’t walk our dog without being armed at any time of the day. More than a few pets have been picked off within feet of their owners.

Because the Cascades used to have Grizzlies. That’s all the reason they have.

Because my wife works for a gov agency that deals with critters, I hear about them often.

My two favorites were the cougar in the woods between Bloomingdale and Roselle and the Elk in Wheaton.

For the cougar, they sent up a thermal imaging camera.
I personally saw the high res images, very interesting.
There had been lo res images from local news on the net.
The wildlife biologists could not say for certain.
We have kin that live next to that woods, they have NO DOUBTS ABOUT IT!

The elk was verified as an elk (not a deer)by a biologist and reported by many.
The first thing is to call anybody around with an elk to go count them. Like the herd in Busse Woods. All present and accounted for.

They said, the critters follow the railroad tracks and sometimes keep going.

Used to commute through Wheaton going to work on my bicycle and car for many years, the bike is very quiet.
I liked going in early, relax and have breakfast with my crew.. read the paper...passing through Wheaton 5- 5:30 AM.
Started seeing coyotes about 15 years back(?), more each year. Now a comm, almost daily sight, especially on the bike.

They stroll down the sidewalks casually like they own the place!

Had two coyotes run right past us one night.
The two Austrailian Shepherds (45&52 lbs) wanted to take off and run with them, but they were on a leash.
Coyotes are incredibly FAST, at 30 MPH on the bike, it feels like I have stopped, as they run off!!!

Our veterinarian lives next to a forest preserve and walks his every night in the woods. Says no worry for a dog that size.

Carry a camera at ready.

“My two favorites were the cougar in the woods between Bloomingdale and Roselle.”

Meacham Grove. We walk that one pretty often. Doesn’t surprise me a bit. I once saw two Bloomingdale police officers trying to herd a flock of wild turkeys back into that place because they were blocking Circle Ave one afternoon.

I stopped to explain that it’s not really possible to herd turkeys. I even volunteered to dash home, grab my turkey gun, and take care of the problem. They declined my offer.

So there’s plenty of food for a large cat there, and a couple of solid water sources as well. I have no doubt at least one breeding pair has taken up residence.

Best,

L

Meacham Grove!
Many forms of unusual wildlife can be seen at that location.

Since an evil automobile took my bike and me out(me 20 days Alx Bros, bike KIA) I avoid the highway.

I like the pavement around the reservoir early afternoon, often very few walkers. I can hammer it for an hour or two! NO CARS.

Occasionally there would be a most unusual sight, laying across the walkway on its back, red bikini bottom with a toilet paper roll (???). Next to the parking lot.
Sometimes others would visit and they would walk off and then return? Takes me a couple minutes a lap, gone only a lap or two?

A hairless gorilla, no shirt or shoes, on a 25 degree day making loud calls? I decided to ride the hills across the way in Medinah that day.

I love riding up the hill on the Westside, but the gravel craps up my chain. You may have noticed the homeless(?) camps between the lake and Bloomingdale road.

Once in a while, I’d see the cops running them off.
And one evening as I was exiting behind the Dunkin Donuts, I ran into a posse! They had rounded up a dozen or more druggies. They let me go. I may have been high on endorphins, nothing more.

The DuPage trails have their secret tales
That would make your blood run cold;
But the queerest they ever did see...
Sorry about that Mr Service.

Chiraq, just the city 762.
That is only the ones reported and written up as murder.
A lot of BS in that number.

Might have crossed ONE THOUSAND in the 70’s.

Alrighty then, let's bring back the American Buffalo. That ought to make the Interstate highways 70, 80 and 90 a blast.

Cleaners?
Most cougars wont do that type of work. Many are Realtors.
