Box Office: ‘Deadpool 2’ Smashes Record With $18.6 Million on Thursday Night
Variety ^ | 05/18/18 | Dave McNary

“Deadpool 2” smashed the record for top preview gross for an R-rated film, topping the previous mark of $13.5 million, set by “It” in September.

“Book Club,” meanwhile, took in $625,000 at 2,781 locations during Thursday previews.

20th Century Fox’s superhero sequel will end “Avengers: Infinity War’s” three-week rule, with forecasts in the $130 million to $150 million range on 4,349 screens for its opening weekend — the widest launch ever for a Fox title.

The original “Deadpool” stunned the industry two years ago with a $132.4 million debut weekend, which remains the record for an R-rated title. It went on to earn $363 million in North America and $783 worldwide, making it the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.

Reynolds returns as the wisecracking mercenary in the 11th title in the X-Men franchise. David Leitch replaced Tim Miller as director, helming from a script by Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Reynolds. The story sees Deadpool forming the X-Force — comprised of Zazie Beetz’s Domino, T.J. Miller’s Weasel, Terry Crews’ Bedlam, Bill Skarsgard’s Zeitgeist, and Rob Delaney’s Peter — to protect a young mutant from Josh Brolin’s Cable.

Disney-Marvel’s fourth weekend of “Infinity War” should take in around $30 million in its fourth frame. The blockbuster topped “Jurassic World” earlier this week to become the fourth-highest grossing film at the worldwide box office with $1.686 billion. Domestic earnings reached $562.9 million after 20 days of release, while the international tally totaled $1.123 billion in three weeks.

I did the same thing at the Ashburn, VA locale for the Alamo Cinema and Draft House.

It’s about homosexual superheroes?

Yup. His writer has described him as "ready and willing to do anything with a pulse."

This seems to be more a recent development, at least for the majority of the run. I've read the majority of Deadpool comics and, other than this running gag with gay baiting Spider Man, he seems to be 100% heterosexual. More recently, they did an issue where they implied he was being a queer with another voice in his head, who turned out to be Madcap, who had been stuck inside Deadpool for years, but Deadpool thought it was just his imagination, an insane voice in his dead. Beyond that, the worst he's done is sleep with a female hippo-looking alien. Like it looked like a hippo. She was really rich though.

The most recent issues, with the queer Madcap insinuation, seem to be attempting to turn Deadpool into a more X-Meny type of character. Which is to say, filled with teenage angst, politically correct and navel gazing.

There’s a minor lesbian character. That’s all I saw.

I started to watch Deadpool 1 on TV. At first I thought it was funny but after awhile, the gay thing just turned me off and I switched the channel.

I guess humor is a strategy to get sodomy acceptable in our society. I hope it never does.

There was a lot of it. I got into discussions with other freepers who didn't even notice it.

I think this is yet another attempt to mainstream this stuff. At the time, I think I looked it up and found out that the main writer or creator is queer.

What the Deadpool directors/writers have done is actually transfer the smart-alec banter of the original comic books into the movie..................

With a big helping of homo normalization.

I didn't read the Dead Pool comics. Was there a lot of homosexual stuff in them as well?

Captain Marvel might be worth going to the theater for but I’m not sure if that movie will be released before or after Avengers.

They are scheduled to come out within a month of each other ... Capt. Marvel first.

BINGO!

I, too, had discussions with Freepers one of whom was defending the sodomy promotion. If Freepers are confused or don’t get it, what does that say about the rest of the country?

I know this is part of a full-court-press Satanic attack on our society. I pray for a backlash of disgust against the perversion of sodomy and the whole “gay” (completely misnamed as the Left does everything else) thing.

You know Captain Marvel is now a woman? I can't help but think this is intended to send a message of "gender fluidity."

Good. As I understand, Captain Marvel will be in Avengers 4. Her solo movie is supposed to happen in the early 90’s and be set during the Kree/Skrull war. It should be good on the big screen.

Saw it last night and I’m still laughing. No letdown from DP1 TO DP2.

Rude, crude, and lewd... definitely not for everyone.

Captain Marvel has been a woman for a while. The original Captain Marvel became Shazam.

Exactly. It's....complicated.

https://io9.gizmodo.com/the-captain-marvel-ms-marvel-shazam-clusterf-ck-explai-1251423862

Fawcett, publishers of the original Captain Marvel/Shazam comics, stopped making them in the ‘50s. In the ‘60s, Marvel Comics trademarked the name Captain Marvel for their own Kree alien superhero, which meant when DC licensed the Fawcett characters in 1972, they had the Fawcett character named Captain Marvel, but couldn’t call the comic Captain Marvel, so they used his transformation cry “Shazam!” for the title.

This extended to other media as well — DC could not promote the character as Captain Marvel anywhere, even though the character’s named was Captain Marvel. So when Billy Batson made his TV debut in 1974, his show was titled Shazam (okay, The Shazam/Isis Hour, but you get the point).

That’s 40+ years of marketing the character as Shazam, and that’s how he’s known to pretty much everybody. Hell, even DC finally gave up when they did the New 52 and finally just renamed the character Shazam, just to cut down on the confusion, and I think it was a smart move. Point is, if even DC calls him Shazam now, he’s Shazam. This battle is lost.

Which brings us to Marvel’s Carol Danvers, and whether she should be called Ms. Marvel or Captain Marvel in her movie debut. I have to go with Captain, because 1) that’s her name now, 2) she was originally named Ms. Marvel to differentiate her from the original Kree Captain Marvel and the Kree Captain Marvel isn’t part of the cinematic universe, and 3) calling her “Ms.” just seems kind of condescending. I mean, it was standard procedure when the character was introduced in 1968, and then the name stuck. But to introduce Carol Danvers to the cinematic universe in 2015 or later and then for everyone to call her Ms. Marvel just seems weird to me, for all the reasons above. Calling her Captain Marvel in the comics was a long time coming, but it was overdue, and there’s no reason to start her out as Ms. in the movies.

I saw the first one. Meh. OK I guess, but didn’t leave up to the hype.

Weirdly though my 5 year old son loves Deadpool. Always dressing up as him and fighting like him. Never seen the movie - obviously.
