This could go on for quite some time. We stayed at Kilauea Military Camp in February 1969 for a week. An eruption started just as we were leaving that lasted a week or so but was a pre-cursor to an eruption in the same area that lasted from May 1969 to 1974. We got some vog from it in Honolulu.

I've been watching livestreams of a fissure putting on its "show" for the past three days. Not sure if it's #17 or 18. They're close together. It's a frightening sight, and the sounds ...... ooooooh my!

Got this scap a little earlier this evening that gives an idea of how high some of the lava chunks are flying.

I feel bad for all the people who live close to all the activity and have had to leave their homes. There's no telling how long this is going to go on.

There's no telling how long this is going to go on.

Lava has been flowing out of the Kilauea vent for about 30 years. I saw it at night from a cruise ship in 2006. It is the longest known flow in history.

The houses that have been destroyed are in Lava Zone 1(highest chance). It's like building a house on the flood bank of the Mississippi and expecting nothing to happen.

But CNN doesn't want you to think that. It doesn't make them money.

A “big one”?
Is that an earthquake or eruption?

Yes, I know there have been lava flows for quite a while.

I was just referring to the current violent activity and these fissures that are raising such a ruckus.

Pretty much anywhere people live is prone to something bad to hit at some point. Floods, earthquakes, tornados (raising hand on that one), avalanches/mudslides, volcanic eruptions .... we’re all at the mercy of Mother Nature.

And I always feel bad for people who get caught up in them. Just the way I am. :-)

“Is that an earthquake or eruption?”

I think they often occur together

I'm trying to ascertain who forced them to live there.

I imagine property values in this area by Hawaiian standards is more affordable. Some are willing to take the chance that their property and themselves could be gone in a heartbeat. The State should have some culpability for zoning the area for Homes.

Global warming caused this to occur, which as we know is all a result of our evil activity against earth.

The global warming experts, who are not to be questioned, as the science is settled, would likely tell you that this event would have no impact.

Just remember they are a lot smarter than you or I.
