The nations largest home builder is betting voice-activated digital assistants and smart devices will become as expected in a new home as garages now are.
Lennar announced Wednesday that standard features in its new homes will include built-in Wi-Fi, smart locks, doorbells, thermostats and lights all controlled by Alexa, Amazons voice-activated digital assistant.
Each house will come with two Alexa-enabled smart speakers, an Echo Show and an Echo Dot. New homeowners will also get a free visit from an Amazon technician to help set everything up and teach them how to use it.

The 3,600-square-foot model home in Vallejo was set up with an Echo Show, an Alexa-enabled smart speaker with screen, an Amazon Echo Dot (a small, audio-only speaker) and a large, wall-mounted television linked to Amazons Fire TV digital media player.
Alexa was linked to the home's many smart devices. Ordering Alexa, turn the temperature to 72, reset the Honeywell thermostat. When the doorbell rang, saying Alexa, who's at the door? turned on the Ring video doorbell and showed a view of the front porch on the TV.
The house also featured other smart devices that could be added, including a smart sprinkler system for the yard and a smart Roomba vacuuming robot.

Hello wire cutters. ;-) But, it seems a lot of people like it. Me, uh, no thanks. Kind of like “onstar”. Nope!
Alexa, please list the social security numbers of all people listening to me in the shower right now.
You know I cant do that.
I digress, but would you new home builders build garages that actually fit two cars (and the people getting in and out of them) comfortably?
Spectacularly stupid idea.
“THEY” keep coming for our..... (Fill in blanks!)....
@PlanetWTF???
++++++++++++++++++++++++
What are you doing, Dave?
What’s the problem—if you need privacy just go the house breaker box and shut off power for a while. ;-)
Open the front door, Alexa...............
Holy crap! Who goes for this stuff?
Alexa’s best potential use (imho) is for elder-care.
Every morning she can remind the dementia-addled person who they are, where they live, what they said they were going to do today, etc.
Also, she can play their favorite music, even if they forgot what it was! ;-)
I just wrote Lennar.
I was pleasant, but I told them that ‘Lennar’ and ‘Surveillance’ are now linked in terms of my perception of their products.
By all means, wire it, and terminate it. LET ME pick the control unit.
P.S. If our overlords decide it is time for the old person to die, Alexa will get that done as well.
“What is your preference, electrocution or lethal injection?” :-(
