Award-winning filmmaker Carlos Carvalho dies after giraffe head-butts him

Carlos Carvalho, 47, was at the Glen Africa Country Lodge in South Africa shooting a series about a British family in a game lodge when he attempted to get a close-up shot of Gerald, the giraffe, Deadline reported.

While Carvalho was trying to get his shot, Gerald head-butted the filmmaker and sent him 16 feet in the air. Carvalho suffered massive head injuries as a result. The filmmaker was airlifted to Johannesburg’s Milpark Hospital where he died.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Richard Booker, whose family owns the lodge, told The Telegraph that Gerald would not be put down.
"Gerald will remain at the lodge. He did nothing wrong,” Booker said.
Giraffe bulls have a calcium bump on their head, so it’s not surprising that the human lacking same was killed. Prayers for the family.
Zoom lenses are wildlife photographers’ best friends.
These shots of people treating wild animals like household pets are tragic.
Having grown up in Montana I can tell you that the locals laugh their asses off whenever they read a story about idiotic tourists in Yellowstone Park who try to pet the buffalo and getting fired for their efforts.
Or was it the Public Heath Care in South Africa?
The public sector health care in South Africa uses a Uniform Patient Fee Schedule as a guide to billing for services. The UPFS categorises the different fees for every type of patient and situation.
Unfortunately there is no UPFS code for head butted by giraffe. Of course at the next UPFS conference this could be proposed. The next UPFS conference is in ten years, so until then don't head butt a giraffe.
I never thought of them as dangerous. Back in the 60’s, children, including myself, would feed them peanuts at the zoo. They have enormous tongues but are very adept at grabbing a peanut with them!
I don’t think they are nasty, a fully grown giraffe is supposed to have no natural enemies. One kick and any predator is dead.
I’m sure they do.
I see photos all the time of absolute idiots acting as if those big beasts are somehow behaviorally related to domestic dogs or something.
I don’t know if this lodge is the place. But I recall seeing a video about a lodge/hotel in Africa, where the giraffes stick their heads into the windows. The dining hall, even bedrooms.
It’s an attraction for the lodge.
Giraffes are not usually aggressive but will fight when they are afraid. I wonder what kind of equipment this man was carrying and I wonder if that is what scared the giraffe.
I am sorry that the man is dead, no one should have to die that way and that young. If the giraffe had mauled him or bitten him that would be different.
We took the kids Busch Gardens in Tampa and the giraffes there were very friendly. The kids asked the keeper if they could feed him some leaves and she said sure loves these as gave them each a stalk to feed the animal. He loved it and they loved him too.
