Huge icebergs could be towed from Antarctica to Cape Town in a bid to solve South Africa's worst drought in a century.
Marine salvage experts are floating the plan to tug the icebergs to the region after its seen the worst water shortage in decades.
Salvage master Nick Sloane told Reuters news agency he was looking for government and private investors for a scheme to guide huge chunks of ice across the ocean, chop them into a slurry and melt them down into millions of litres of drinking water.
"We want to show that if there is no other source to solve the water crisis, we have another idea no one else has thought of yet," said Sloane, who led the refloating of the capsized Italian passenger liner Costa Concordia in 2014.

Anyone remember Richard Pryor's 1985 movie, "Brewster's Millions"?
Well one of the subplots of Pryor's character trying to spend $30 Million in a month was his investment in this venture. His company was going to take ice bergs to the Middle East to provide water and water for crop irrigation.
At the time I thought it was hilarious but was also intrigued by the possibility of this working. Now I see they were taking a few months ago about this for California's water problem.
I can't wait to see this pulled off and if it can be made to work.
Not till they stop the white genocide!
They won’t do it because the government in SA is incompetent.
They’ve already proven that by allowing the water crisis to get as bad as it is, and by spurning Israeli offers of help.
Was just going to say it. Actually one of my favorite Pryor and Candy movies. “John Candy: you ever seen his wife? Batter: Ya, she’s an ugly b——”.
It would probably be a lot cheaper and cost effective to buy Israeli desalinization technology.
I read that recently also. They probably will allow people to die of thirst and no food. Yet they have the resources to pay for it.
It’s a great idea. That way they don’t have to accept the Israelis’ help that was offered to set up desalination plants.
The stupid, it burns.
They took the land now let them get their own water.
Whats wrong with desalination?
Saved me the post. They don’t have the expertise, now. At best they’d have to hire someone from another country.
I would think filling barges with fresh water from closer locations would make more sense. I can’t imagine the horsepower needed to pull a 75 percent submerged iceberg thousands of miles. And then... ?
Is Antarctic ice kosher?
If so, then the SA politicians will have to nix this idea.
I remember one of the Popular science or mechanics magzines florating this idea back in the 1970s, from Antarctica to Saudi Arabia.
They even figured out a non energy propulsion system.
I believe Israel offered them hydrological assistance and they turned it down. Screw them.
Jews do it.
And Al Gore will say, “See, I told you global warming was making the icebergs disappear!”.
If we take all the ice from the polar caps, what will globull warming use to raise the sea levels?
