GI Jews: Jewish Americans in World War II” begins as many Holocaust documentaries do, with a history of the rise of Hitler and Nazism in Germany mixed with what is now standard archival footage of Brownshirts and Kristallnacht. Throw in interviews with some Jewish celebrities — in this case, Carl Reiner and his friend Mel Brooks wearing his old Army jacket — and it has all the workings of a typical PBS documentary.
But the film, which premieres April 11, on the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day, quickly takes an unexpected turn. Jewish-American soldiers, the viewer learns, weren’t only fighting Nazis during the war — they had to battle the anti-Semitic prejudice of many of their fellow soldiers.
All told, some 550,000 Jews served in World War II. A few had experienced anti-Semitism at home already in the form of “Gentiles Only” signs, for example, which were found at some public facilities across the country.

Yiddish is the lingua franca of New York City. A wonderfully soulful and colorful language that is being lost in the west and practically wiped out in Israel (I stand to be corrected on that point). Also getting lost is the food of Jewish Eastern Europe as “healthy” Shepardic and Israeli stuff is getting popular. I don’t think it is a patch on the delicious, hardy foods that I grew up with. Hummus! Yuck!
I realize we all go to superlatives and exaggerations on FR but when we are talking about the Holocaust and/or Americans participation in WWII, for God’s sake, we should speak with some restraint, don’t you think?

MWT related a story a while back about being Jewish in the First Gulf War . . . all the Jewish soldiers on the airbase were gathered up and issued “Protestant B” dogtags to avoid this issue.

Ironically, there were restrictions against Gentiles in some areas. They were placed by Orthodox Jews who wanted to avoid violating any unclean laws, especially regarding women.
We had a Jewish country club because Jews weren’t allowed in many organizations.

When I was a kid in Israel, it was technically illegal.
Same with Ladino.
The heavy-handed goal was to unify the various Jewish groups from the Diaspora and speak one language — Hebrew.
The voting franchise was more widespread in Imperial Germany then in the UK. (Not sure about France, Imperial Russia - vote? what’s a vote?)
So when they say WWI was a war to make the world safe for democracy, you could almost make the case at least at the beginning of the war it was the other way around.
Even the Austro-Hungarian Empire was much more of a classically liberal place then it has been portrayed.

My understanding is that exchange never took place in reality, but was inserted into the series.
What a loss! Not one young person can read the great Yiddish writers like Shalom Aleichem or the playwrights of the Yiddish theater. The only Yiddish theater performer in Manhattan is a gentile!
