Former Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen, a Democrat, is leading Republican Rep. Marsha Blackburn by double digits going into the Senate race to replace retiring Sen. Bob Corker, according to a poll released Thursday.

The poll, conducted by Middle Tennessee State University, shows 45% of registered voters favor Bredesen, while just 35% would back Blackburn. In addition, 17% are undecided.

For registered independents, preference for Bredesen over Blackburn increases to 12 points. A fifth of Republican respondents would cross the aisle and vote for Bredesen, compared to just five percent of Democrats who would do so for Blackburn.

Blackburn's poor performance in the poll shows that Democrats are in striking distance to flip a long-held Republican Senate seat. When Corker last year abruptly decided to bow out of running for reelection, Blackburn quickly jumped in to take his place.

I don’t think our side is willing to help campaigns. I see a lot of comments about how we are going to lose and how bad the candidates are, but no one wants to attend local meetings or even help campaign for the candidates. A campaign isn’t all or nothing in terms of volunteering. It can be helping with phone calls or sending a letter to an editor. It can be talking with people at our churches and encouraging them to go vote. I think the base needs to stop having an attitude of either Congress does 100% of what I want or I’m not going to vote. An attitude like that is how we didn’t have larger majorities in both houses. Now we are about to lose governorships and this administration because impeachment is certain.

We need to get out our priorities then. The generation after Millennials is skewing conservative in some places. Instead of acting like turning blue is guaranteed, we need to stop having a defeatist attitude.

And as usual, the conservatives in the republican party will form the circular firing squad, and crucify any candidate that isn’t perfect, or worse, let the socialist-democrats pick their candidates for them.

And still worse, support 3rd party candidates who have no other purpose than to drain votes away from the more conservative of the two major party candidates.
