Woman says she felt fat-shamed at Islands of Adventure ride

ORLANDO, Fla. - A woman said she felt fat-shamed when she was unable to ride Skull Island: Reign of Kong at Universal's Islands of Adventure.

Angel Morales said she asked workers if she could ride the ride bench with one fewer person so that she wouldn't make anyone sitting beside her feel uncomfortable.

Morales said she felt humiliated when employees declined her request.

The theme park doesn't have weight restrictions, so Morales said she didn't know she couldn't go on the ride until she was about to board it.

Morales said she bought annual passes to the park last year and couldn't wait to check out The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

"(I) couldn't fit on any of the Harry Potter rides because of my weight," she said. "(I) did a lot of bag-holding in Diagon Alley and that kind of thing."(snip)

"It's somewhat humiliating to have to ask for an accommodation because of one's weight -- that you have to put yourself out there and kind of beg to be able to ride and embarrass yourself because of weight," Morales said.

She filed a discrimination complaint with the Florida Commission on Human Relations. She said overweight people should be a protected class.

"Their interest is getting bodies and getting money and not accommodating paying customers," she said. "That's how I felt."

Morales said she was offered a $100 gift card, dinner and movie tickets, but she doesn't plan to return to the park.

But she’s not embarrassed or shamed to tell the whole world about it on the evening news??

Why is everyone dissing this Woman? People always complain when a Overweight person is seated next to them on a Plane.

This Woman realized that her size could cause another Guest some discomfort and the Ride Operator should have accommodated her request (if this story is factual).

If she got a bench seat to herself how could they possibly deny anyone else a bench seat to themselves.

Wait times would double.

If I read this correctly, she didn’t want the Bench Seat for herself.

She just wanted one less person seated in it so everyone would be comfortable.

She filed a discrimination complaint with the Florida Commission on Human Relations. She said overweight people should be a protected class.

It's called engineering. If she's above the safe weight for the ride, then she is being protected when they keep her off. Or does this oversized snowflake (would that make her an avalanche?) think all rides should be engineered for a buffalo, even if that over-engineering triples the cost for normal, healthy people and reduces ride capacity, thus more than doubling the wait time for those who can already safely ride.

If i read this correctly, she didn’t say she couldn’t go on, she said she couldn’t go on because she couldn’t fit with another person and they wouldn’t let her ride alone. That’s not the Park’s fault.

Fat? Yes! Shamed? Seems she’s the only one ashamed of her fat.

Ok.

Everyone else would want one less person on their bench seats.

Same argument.

Difference between this lady and the random overweight person spilling into two seats on an airplane is the random airplane passenger can actually BUY two seats.

The issue here may have been weight distribution on the ride itself. Those rides are engineered for a certain amount of weight distributed in a certain way travelling at a specified speed. Exceed the specifications in either way and bad things happen.

See the thread ongoing right now about the kiddo who was beheaded on a ride.

would they turn away a blind person?..a person in a wheelchair....how about a person extremely tall?

A blind person can't change the fact that they're blind.

A wheelchair bound person can't change that fact.

A tall person is going to remain tall.

Weight and size limits on rides aren't personal discrimination. The limits are determined by physics and engineering. There's nothing that the perfect-bodied, fat-shamers can do about that.

If she rode with the kiddo, he would have lived.

The obesity problem is epidemic. Unfortunately folks just refuse to admit it is a problem. Preachers won’t “go there”.

IMO, three things are compounding the problem:
Bad diet: fatty foods and soda pop
Bad lifestyle: sitting in front of the tube for hours
Disrespect of God: you respect God, you respect the body he gave you, and try to take decent care of it.

You have constructed a false premise.

A person does not choose to be blind, or in a wheelchair, or extremely tall, or White. Barring some legitimate medical condition, a person chooses to remain fat.

Correct, there was no sign, therefore they were no obligated to accommodate her. At any given social interaction her girth could be an issue whether its an amusement ride, a medical procedure, a bus seat, standing on a crowded subway, whatever.

Not trying to be cruel, but this woman likely has complete control over her weight. That she chooses not to alter it does not make her a victim.

I’m too big for most of them. I would have taken the gift card as a discount for one of the excellent restaurants in the area.

My second grandchild was born March 12th of this year.
My son sent me pictures he had taken of me and I was stunned at how I looked. Not good. Too much winter weight. I’ve put myself on a diet and am now walking everyday.

Lady, do what I did. Use this as a wake-up call to get healthy.
Don’t expect the rest of the world to change to accommodate your weight problem.
