What’s in a name: Gender-neutral baby names are on the rise

NEW YORK (AP) — Whether Royal, Charlie or Salem, Skyler, Justice or Oakley, unisex names for babies are on the rise among parents more willing than ever to embrace the possibility of gender fluidity in their children and attempt to head off sexism on their behalf.

“We’re definitely seeing more conversation today around the distinction of a truly gender-neutral name,” said Linda Murray, global editor-in-chief of BabyCenter.com. “This generation is truly interested in gender neutral names.”

The Social Security Administration puts out a top 10 list of popular baby names every year based on its registrations, but it also keeps track of names on the rise in its top 1,000. Name-watchers said crossovers and more neutral names haven’t overtaken the top spots but are more heavily represented in the broader ranking, especially among millennial parents.

Pop culture and honoring family or religious history are important in baby naming, as is the cool factor. But more names are being used for either sex regardless of which gender they were originally associated with, and neutral naming has become a flashpoint for debate.

“We chose a gender-neutral name, Riley, for my daughter,” said Lori Kinkler, a psychologist in San Antonio, Texas. “We knew her sex, but gender is fluid and yet to be determined. Of all the difficulties faced by those who live beyond, or across, the binary, we didn’t want name-changing to be one of them. ... I like that she feels she has options and knows she’ll be accepted by us no matter what.” Riley is 3.

I am so glad my birth name is K’shan Karenga Shatoya Rah’mann Ahmed Hussein Abdul-Kassim Quest’-Arkton. My kids get into the colleges of their choice, my cousins are on NPR every morning, and I don’t have to worry about these old-school Mayflower insanities.

My granddaughter's name is Jamie.....she's 24.

I wanted my daughter to name her Elizabeth but apparently that was the name of a very mean nun. :-)

More proof that the parents push trans gender bullshit on their children. I think it’s child abuse. Kids can’t even be free to grow up without being indoctrinated into liberal hell.

No, the number of sick parents is on the rise. The babies will have to live with their parents’ sickness for the rest of their lives. Hopefully, it isn’t like (physical) child abuse, and it doesn’t get passed down from generation to generation.

I’m from San Antonio. If I ever needed a psychologist (and I’m of the belief that you should be able to work out your problems, not depend on someone else to do that), I’d have a simpler task in finding one...because I’d NEVER, EVER use Lori Kinkler. She’s evidently one of those psychologists who enter the field in order to find the cure for their own neuroses/psychoses.

I’ve been very puzzled and bothered by the bizarre trend of naming kids with SURNAMES.

Peyton, Collins, Grant, Emery, Holland, McKinley...etc.

Just strange and these are pretty much gender-neutral.

“This gives weight to the idea that psychologists enter that field mainly to identify what is seriously mentally wrong with them.”

Bingo. What is really depressing is the knowledge that approximately two thirds of the human race are stark raving mad.

When I went to the pediatricians office back when the 4th? Star Wars came out, there must have been three or four newborns named Anakans.

Oh yeah. we need non-binary names.

Bring back the nature loving hippies who were happy naming their kids, Spring, Summer, Rain, River, Sky, Tree, Leaf, etc.

Weird names of some of my students:

I had some students with names I swore their mother must have read off the side of a truck from the maternity ward window. My favorite was "LaShanda", which I could never forget. Shanda in Yiddish means "disgrace", and she was a fabulous ambassador for the name.

Fellow educators, what's the funniest name one of your students was stuck with?

Speaking from family experience, gender-neutral names are not fun for children. They are equivalent to the unpronounceable made-up ghetto names in their impact in the classroom and any time the child has to enter a new peer group. They are an assault against the child.

Nutty psycho mom. Child abuser.

“Riley” was the name of the (female) child in the Pixar “Inside Out” movie.

There may be a Boomerang Effect to all these attempts at de-sexing people. The children of the next decade may have names like “Brick Dickerson or Velvet Rose”.

Now you've done it. You made me LOL!!
