Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen has announced that the wreckage of a military ship on which five brothers died in World War II has been discovered in the South Pacific.
The sunken USS Juneau was found on Saturday, off the coast of the Solomon Islands, by an expedition led by Allen.
The ship was hit by Japanese torpedoes during the Battle of Guadalcanal in November 1942, killing 687 men, including the five Sullivan brothers from Waterloo, Iowa.

Juneau was a light cruiser of the Atlanta class. They were armed with only 5 in dual purpose guns to serve in the antiaircraft role.
The gov’t didn’t but the brothers appealed and the War Dept approved a waiver with horrible consequences not before the gov’t got some propaganda value out of them serving together.
The next FReepathon starts in about two weeks.
We need to finish this one first.
Come on FReepers, lets do this!
Paul Allen is spending his money to do some really interesting stuff.
They ended that right after they all were killed.
That was the premise of “Saving Private Ryan”, since all of his brothers were killed, that’s why they went to “save” him.
The elementary/middle school at Yokosuka Naval Shipyard in Japan is named for the Sullivans. I attended there.
Isn’t there also something about an only son not having to be drafted during a war?
Should you ever be in the Seattle area, I HIGHLY recommend his Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum in Everett WA.
It is a collection of fully restored and functional WW2 aircraft that all sides flew. Yup, I said functional. They all fly regularly, flew in WW2 combat and are restored to end of assembly line condition.
He is now adding combat served armor (tanks and other heavies). The docents and restoring craftsmen are largely retired Boeing workers
And Bill Gates and his spouse are spending their money on abortion, birth control and questionable "vaccination" programs.
She got caught in the bar room brawl of Guadalcanal in November of 1942 and heavily damaged and was retiring when a sub got her. If I remember right she had already taken one torpedo in the battle and was retiring on one screw.
