Greetings from Missouri. Cool day with no sunshine. Bummer. Rainy and drizzle steady most of day. Hubby has some of seed starter stuff going. Still waiting for him to finish my new garden to plant lettuce and spinach.

He is currently distracted from that project by his decision to smooth out some rough edges of the greenhouse concrete floor. After that he has decided on a second painting of the floor. Just as I was thinking I could start moving shelves and stuff in for plants etc.

I ran across another formula for week killer:

1 gallon of vinegar; 2 cups Epsom Salts; 1/4 cup Dawn Dish Washing liquid;

Spray in the morning - dead by dinnertime.

Have a great weekend. Prayers up for all. God Bless.

Will this formula also kill grass?

My husband is an absolute fiend about weeds and our wild violets nearly have him killing everything in sight, trying to “take them out, once and for all!”

I’ve assured him they are almost prehistoric, like roaches, etc.

Any way, I’m just across the MO state line in KS and my yard is my garden with lots of perennial flowers but still some grassy areas, along with flowering shrubs. I’d love to get some weeds w/out using stronger chemicals, that when the “mass weed murderer” I’m married to sprays away even on windy days!

I’ll admit, this killing of some of my prized flowers and shrubs, does put me into visions of revenge of my own so I just go in and try to make lemonade and think of the beautiful gardens in France and England and maybe a cruise to the Greek isles!

Greetings from the planet Hoth (aka CNY)

At the end of February, I went out, got some manure, turned over a section of garden, and started a few pea seeds indoors to plant ASAP.

We have not seen the ground since two days after I planted the seeds and there’s more *global warming* on the way with ANOTHER nor’easter forecast for Tues/Wed.

It’s been one a week for the entire month so far and with each one, we are getting slammed.

February was so nice and then winter came back for another try. With a vengeance.

Just like last year, and I hope the summer isn’t as bad as last years was. I do hear tell that Joe Bastardi is predicting a hot dry summer.

BRING IT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you have been following the national Weather, you will know that New England has been competing with Siberia and Antarctica for a new world’s record for BLIZZARDS in March.

AND...we are keeping up and in the running for World Championship!

Argh!

Waiting for the true leaves on my tomato plants so I can transfer them to a 16 oz clear plastic cup that you can even write on.

Then for my experiments with nutrients.

I'm old. Retired. Need something to keep me off the streets.

Well, I just finished my weekly 3 hr drive to work on the rent house. Hubby found 3 yaupon hollies, 2 boxwoods, a small rose bush and what he called “a viney thing in a big pot” all free on Craigslist. He had to detour thru Ft Worth to dig the shrubs. So, I have new things in my curb appeal repertoire. (I am leary of the “viney thing. Hubby doesn’t even recognize poison ivy. I doubt it’s that... maybe)

It was 86 here today and sunshiney! I drove up with the top down on my car, radio blaring. Got here at sundown and temp still at 80. I’m so sorry for so many people’s snow but God knew when He created me that I need heat. Below 80 and I need a sweater if I’m not workin.

Will the vinegar/epsom salt weed killer have lasting effects on the soil?

Having fun with my seedlings, but I can’t put any out until at LEAST next week. We have one more possibly-freezing night to deal with down here in NC (I will now pause for the jeers and flying tomatores from y’all up north of me.)

My husband told me to simplify this year. I TRIED. I only had five types of tomatoes planned, and then Baker Creek sent me samples for three more...I haven’t told him yet.

I’m trying to grow a moringa tree this year. One of my seeds has sprouted and is a whole two inches tall. Fingers crossed that it will 1) grow and 2) be useful.

Which reminds me, I killed a fire ant hill with orange oil and water and am passing that on. One ounce of straight orange oil mixed into one gallon of water, drench the hill, and wait about 18 hours. I’ve only tried it on the first one I found, but if it works consistently, it’ll be the best solution I’ve seen yet. I normally kill them with boiling water, but that doesn’t always get ALL of them and also kills happy microorganisms nearby.

Passing that on for all the other ant-oppressed gardeners.

No snow on Humboldt Bay but copious amounts just a few miles east of us. Clear skies here but still don’t have the mulch on the strawberry beds. Headed out to breakfast with old friends as is usual on Saturday morning...

Thanks for the ping. Reminded me to look after my Canna seedlings that I hadn’t watered for a day or two. After 18 days, only about 1/3 have sprouted and about 8 are in leaf. Some sprouted in 6 days of soaking. I did a bit of additional scarification to the slow ones this week. All the varieties I purchased have the laser scarification treatment - two tiny holes burned into or through the hard seed coat.
