The world needs to do more to prepare for the next huge volcanic eruption, a team of leading scientists says.
The devastating Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 and the Tōhoku earthquake in Japan in 2011 highlighted some of the worst-case scenarios for natural disasters. But humanity has not had to deal with a cataclysmic volcanic disaster since at least 1815, when the eruption of Tambora in Indonesia killed tens of thousands of people and led to a year without a summer in Europe and North America. Such world-altering blasts rank at 7 or more on the Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) scale of eruptions, which goes to 8.
The next VEI-7 eruption could occur within our lifetimes, or it could be hundreds of years down the road, says Chris Newhall, a volcanologist with the Mirisbiris Garden and Nature Center in Santo Domingo, Philippines. But the time to have this discussion is now, he says, so that researchers and government officials can plan and prepare before an emergency strikes.

Yeah, well if the Yellowstone caldera goes that would be waaaaay beyond anything humans have ever experienced, a whole different kind of catastrophe. It could go anytime but it might not go for thousands of years yet. Let’s hope.....
Lots of new rich volcanic soil for your garden.
Then.....
BANG!
Lots of activity in Asia and Central and South America.
Nothing on the North American coast since St. Helens.
What are you supposed to do?
Well, duh! Didn’t you read the article? We are unprepared. Therefore, I recommend you prepare.
Do I have to do EVERYTHING for you? Sheesh!
News Flash to volcanologists: Given the magnitude of those past eruptions (or future ones of that magnitude and higher), there is NO preparing.......
Nuclear power plants powering indoor greenhouses and a lot of them, that’s about the only thing you could do to prepare for a major blow. Going to be considerably cooler with dim sunlight for years and years. Gorgeous sunsets or so I’ve read, though, so if you’re far enough away to survive, are able to keep warm and eat, at least there’s that.
There should be studies on the make up of the gases in each Caldera.
Northern California / Oregon out at sea that has been way to quite and highly dangerous considering one of the largest volcano's in the world is under water there.
That’s why I moved from Los Angeles to New Hampshire 2 years ago. The infrastructure’s so antiquated out there they’ll never recover from a major one.
John Belusi made the observation on how to watch out for future natural eruptions by knowing what a “ZIT” looked like before it erupted.
FOOD FIGHTT!
Then when the super volcano blows I will eat chocolate until I go into a coma and will never feel the hot lava as it creeps over my prone body.
If only Trump had signed the Paris Accords, we’d all be safe!
Volcanologists want some of that sweet sweet global disaster money.
Sorry, I’m still cutting trees and re-building from Harvey to worry about an Earth fart
Such world-altering blasts rank at 7 or more on the Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) scale of eruptions, which goes to 8.
>So were supposed to do what, exactly?
Tax industry and redistribute it (via Al Gore’s money handlers) to third world dictatorships.
NO ONE can prepare for a volcanic eruption!
Send money.
