It’s amazing how much they drink. Reading the diaries and autobiographies of theater artists, etc., I’m amazed at how juiced up they have to be just to talk to another person. Saturday night in the west end, you end up stepping over inebriated Brit men and women.

Considering the Brits were “civilized” then, how much were the Irish drinking?

I’m a fan of British mysteries but it’s amazing how much booze is packed away in such as “Inspector Morse” or even “Midsomer Murders”.

I suspect the beer was not as strong as it is today. Probably something like 3.2 beer.

Hogarth’s engraving Gin Lane is a well known image of the gin craze, and is often paired with “Beer Street”, creating a contrast between the miserable lives of gin drinkers and the healthy and enjoyable lives of beer drinkers.

Today I learned about the Gin Craze. It seems like a good example of how governments often create more problems than they solve.

People used to drink beer because it was safer than water.

This was true for hundreds of years.

The first 4-1/2 years I worked at Anheuser Busch in ST.
. Louis we had beer in every break room. You could drink before work, on breaks, and after work. That all ended 32 years ago this month.

I was in Russia for a few weeks some years ago and there were lines at the local store first thing in the morning with guys getting a full sized glass filled with vodka on their way to work.
