GANGNEUNG, South Korea It ended with a duck and a dodge, which was sad. Shani Davis deserved better than that. He finished seventh in what was probably the final race of his Olympic career, and then he ducked out of the rink without walking though the mixed zone so that he could dodge the media. As athlete crimes go, this was a parking ticket. Not a big deal. But by doing it, Davis robbed himself.
Maybe he doesnt care about a grand sendoff. More likely, he didnt trust us to give him one, and that is what is sad: After four Olympics and one of the great American careers in the history of the Games, Davis still feels unappreciated. Its a good thing speed-skating ovals dont have corners. Davis would see an enemy around every one.
So lets say what we mean, whether he believes it or not: Shani Davis is an American Olympic legend. He was the first black athlete to win individual gold in the Winter Olympics. He has won two gold medals and two silvers, and he competed in four Olympics.
His seventh-place finish here is actually another testament to his greatness. There were 26 skaters in this event. Davis, 35, was the oldest. The three medalists are 28, 25 and 23. And still he finished seventh.

He agrees with George Lincoln Rockwell. His skin color is his uniform.
That is only a meaningful accomplishment in the last 25 years or so. Before that, amateur athletes rarely competed in consecutive Olympic games.
Eric Heiden won five gold medals in speed skating in 1980. He won the gold medal in EVERY speed skating event held at the time, and set Olympic records for all of them.
THAT was greatness.
Without sportsmanship victories mean nothing IMO.
No doubt.
I recall fondly the years of my youth when the losers of the Super Bowl and World Series were welcomed and celebrated at the White House.
I felt that his focus on racisn probably distracted him from the degree of concentration required to excel at that level. The other skaters were thinking about nothing but skating.
Miss Vonn too with her focus on the President must have lost her edge as well. You would think Olympic athletes would know better than that.
IF he was that old and slow, why was he there?
You should wash the sand out of your vagina.
I'm surprised the minority-loving media has not made him a household name, if he was that accomplished.
Meh:
Michael Phelps is an Olympic Legend. Usain Bolt is an Olympic Legend. Bonnie Blair is an Olympic Legend.
Legend?? LOL! This arrogant, racist punk isn’t fit to clean Eric Heiden’s jock strap.
Whiny cry baby
He’ll be working at Home Depot by May.
Davis has been a competitive speed skater for his entire adult life. He's 35 years old, for heaven's sake. By the time Heiden was 35 he had completed medical school and was in the early stages of his professional career as an orthopedic surgeon.
He’ll have a chance to win gold in the Summer Olympics’ new event— the Drive-By-Athalon debuting in (large U.S. city of your choice).
Worst.Olympics.Ever!
He started it.
Almost as good as Jeb Bush...7th
Two gold and two silver in 4x Olympics is “good” - certainly better than I can do! - but it isn’t “outstanding” by any means.
Winning four golds at one Olympics is outstanding.
Winning 4 or five golds and silvers at one Olympics is outstanding.
Winning 4 or 8 golds or silvers at 4 or 5 Olympics? That’s outstanding!
Oh wait. Black-social-justice Anti-American protester mad-as-hell-at-Trump athlete? That makes all the difference in the world!
Now, that made me laugh...:)
