OMG!....The key phrase is ‘the student made a comment’.
A comment is not necessarily a threat. It is often nothing more than an observation. My guess is if the average female student had said this, nothing more than a few giggles would have been the result.

If they were able to get a search warrant based on the kid commenting that a square-root symbol looks like a gun, then apparently some law-enforcement agencies and some judges are also insane. The judge who issued such a warrant should be removed from the bench, and the law enforcement officer(s) who asked for the warrant should be fired.

Of course, if the kid and/or his parents consented to a warrantless search then they are not too bright.
