Jimi Hendrix & John McLaughlin Record Plant N.Y 25 March 69
Before he was “Mahavishnu” John McLaughlin?
1969, he started Mahavishnu Orchestra in 1971.
When did he start doing that political show?

I had a bootleg of this recording back in the seventies. Basically, it’s just a jam session that doesn’t showcase the virtuosity of eitehr guitarist.
bkmk
and Gibson guitar is going bankrupt.....kids aren’t playing guitar anymore. this stuff is vintage and alas, going away
This was the time where McLaughlin had recently come to New York. He recorded a record or two with Tony William’s group. One of them is “Emergency” which I have on CD in the car. His playing is raw but much better than in this jam. He also played on Miles Davis’ “Tribute to Jack Johnson” which was the soundtrack for the movies. Again raw but brilliant. In this jam, it sounds like Jimi’s running the show and he pretty much sucks at it. Hendrix and McLaughlin were on two different levels. Had Hendrix lived, there’s a small chance he could have risen to McLaughlin’s level.
I much enjoy McLaughlin’s tribute album to Bill Evans.

Hendrix was groundbreaking and spawned thousands of wannabees. At the same time, Mike Bloomfield and Peter Green were playing otherworldly lyrical blues that was diametrically opposed to what Jimi was doing. One of my pet guitarist creds is if he ever played with Miles. McLaughlin did and Miles told him he should go form his own band. Hence, Mahavishnu Orchestra. Double neck, acoustic, Gibson fat archtop or various and sundry solid bodies, JM owns the guitar.
I have that CD. It’s on my regular rotation.
