Outback server fired over online rant slamming church for skipping tip

A Florida Outback Steakhouse worker says she filled a local megachurch’s $735 takeout order and then was fired when she ranted on social media about not getting a tip.

...

Christ Fellowship Church in Palm Beach Gardens was holding a conference and called in an order to the local Outback Wednesday for 25 steak dinners, 25 chicken dinners and 25 side orders of potatoes that Yoder said she had to prepare, costing her other tips.

...

A friend read her post and called the church to complain and was told that the person who picked up the food didn’t know to leave a tip.

“Coming in to eat or takeout, you should automatically be wanting to tip 15 percent,” Yoder said. “From there, you either go up or go down based on service.”

A church representative called the restaurant Thursday to make it up to Yoder.

Nevertheless, she was shown the door.

... Outback has a strict policy forbidding workers from posting about customers on social media, WSVN reported.

Outback even reimbursed the church for its big order.

“We did not call the restaurant to have her fired, we wanted to get the situation resolved,” church official David Lonsberry told the Palm Beach Post.

Social Media claims another “victim”.

Watch the video...this chick deserves to get canned for her attitude toward paying customers without even knowing the facts.

I've never tipped for a take-out order.

People with nose rings are not psychologically stable.

We’ve never seen anybody expect a tip for a takeout order before. But even if it’s customary there, the waitress has absolutely no business complaining and certainly not publicly. . Tips are voluntary contributions or expressions, NOT entitlements. I’d fire her right away

Once a waitress I worked with stormed after a party who just left her some change and threw the coins at them screaming “Keep It! You obviously need it more than I do.”

Needless to say, she was canned on the spot.

She just needs a gentle spanking.

I’m a big believer in tipping well. These folks make around $2.35 an hour. That’s a lot of work packing up that many meals. I feel her pain. That was incredibly tacky not to tip on a $700 bill.

Too many blooming onions in her work days! I wonder whether those appetizers don’t make it to the table or she eats the leftovers from each party she serves. Either way, she’s going to need another restaurant job if she wants to keep that figure.

I’d say it was up to the Outback Mgmt. to add a gratuity to the total right up front when the order was made to insure that a waitperson who depends on tips is properly compensated if they pulled her off of serving tables to assemble the to go order.
That being said, I don’t believe she filled that order all by her lonesome and getting all pissy online while a big Millennial thing is just crass. She should have griped to the managers that assigned her the order over her reduced earnings.

The tip pays for table service. No table service, no tip. I tip very very well for good service so no Scrooge here!

I don’t agree. I tip well for table service, but I never tip for takeout. I have never heard of tipping for takeout, and I worked in a restaurant kitchen.

See my post #14. We see eye to eye on tipping.

Probably just a Christian hater.

I tip a the wait staff because:

* I take their time to ask questions about the menu
* I expect them to bring my food promptly but not if there’s something wrong with it
* I expect my drink to always have something in it
* In general I expect prompt service when I know their time is shared with other customers

None of which is true for a pick-up order. I don’t tip for pick-ups, nobody is doing anything but cashing me out.

Me neither.

Why would you tip a carry out order?

For some reason, christians get a bad rap for tipping.

I’m a Christian and I tip.

A few months ago, on a weekend vacation, we ate at a cool NASCAR themed BBQ in Mooresville, NC.

A few weeks later I was cleaning receipts out of my wallet and realized I took the signed copy by mistake. I called the manager and found out the waitress’ name. We sent a check to make up the lost tip. And it was a lot
more than the original one.

I disagree with tipping for take out. They don’t clean, set a table, wait on you or bus after. Maybe if you could tip the cooks directly they should get something but IMO 15% or more for great service is not merited or justified for take out.

One order, fine. No tip is needed. 75 orders of food. You bet I’m tipping.

I once hosted a very important business meeting at a restaurant with fine food. The service was horrible - so bad that my guests suggested I not leave a tip. I nevertheless left her something like twenty dollars (if the service were better I would have left 30 for that lunch ). Anyway she actually came running out to the street demanding I give her more! We were all amazed, and I’m ever do grateful my business guests realized we were dealing with a very ungrateful nut case - it wasn’t my fault. The owner fired the waitress The owner insisted on giving me a little hand- made booklet. I examined it and it was a coupon book for ten free lunches for two. ! The owner was so embarrassed! (I gave it back, with thanks. ). Waiters may need tips and I’m sympathetic. But they still have to provide decent service. The jobs can get difficult during peak meal hours but they don’t require any rocket science.
