“We will beat back any disadvantage that our lack of attention has placed and America will once again lead in space,” Pence said. “We will return our nation to the moon, we will go to Mars, and we will still go further to places that our children’s children can only imagine. We will maintain a constant presence in low-Earth orbit, and we’ll develop policies that will carry human space exploration across our solar system and ultimately into the vast expanses. As the president has said, ‘Space is,’ in his words, ‘the next great American frontier.’ And like the pioneers that came before us, we will settle that frontier with American leadership, American courage and American ingenuity.”

Vice President Mike Pence promised the American people that under President Donald Trump, the United States will control the heavens—presumably, meaning space—as he said America does the world.

Of course, they distorted Pence’ words...I actually think they hate him even more than they hate Trump...but I thought it was pretty inspiring overall.

I’m sure...in fact, as an historian, I know...that when Columbus was asking Isabella to fund the trip to the “Indies,” people around her were snickering and saying the Spanish equivalent of “nah, he’s a nutcase and besides, who needs to go to those other places anyway.”

That part resonates with me. We have some catching up to do due to prior lack of will, funding, and inspiration. America should be unrivaled in this field.

Pence's mention of "The Expanse" may be based on the TV show.

The show has only two seasons so far (based on Vol. 1 and 2 of the series)--(spoiler alert)..

but in a later book it is clear that the author agrees with my analysis of space colonies--they will break free and fight a war on Earth the moment they believe they can prevail...

I admire VP Pence, for his patriotism, integrity, dedication, and also for his gift of eloquence... Soaring rhetorical flourishes, such as this: ["And I can assure you, under President Donald Trump, American security will be as dominant in the heavens as we are here on Earth.”] Pence must be acknowledged for his impact on American's psyche, and his words are always carefully chosen. Thus, he is virtually immune to the spin-spasms of the haters!
