Film footage from an early Movietone camera team showing everyday life in New York City during 1929 (pre-Crash). I got a mild case of vertigo just watching the guys plastering the side of the Chrysler Building. Note how well dressed everybody seems to be. Appx 15 minutes

I have a picture of my grandfather and uncle shoving snow in suits and hats. My how styles have changed.
Thanks for posting this. I’m amazed at the number of fat, overweight, obese folks were walking around. My how times have changed.
That is really fascinating. Thanks.
Well I feel old now.
Today they hide behind the word “progressive” and hope it fools everyone.
Thanks for sharing this clip, NRx. It is a wonderful little time capsule.
Very interesting...very smoggy...if the environmentalists would only admit how clean our air is NOW! Note, also how short the men’s ties were....I noticed that this week looking through old pictures of my husband’s great grandfather.
Very cool!
Everyone dressed to the nines. Women well turned out. Different time.
And it was just as segregated as the Deep South.
I have a photo of a 1930s motorcycle hillclimb event near Reading, PA. Many of the spectators are wearing ties.
I think that is at least partly because the four-in-hand knot was popular back then. It uses up a lot of length in a tie. Try it.
They're not walking around now.
Bear in mind that, back then, a suit of clothes cost a weeks pay or more. They didn't have cheap screen printed t-shirts and polyester junk. A man might own one or two suits, half a dozen shirts and only one or two pairs of shoes. And, of course, a hat. Grown men did not wear baseball caps, underwear or shorts out in public; certainly not in the city. Women who were not prostitutes knew better than to dress like one. This was before the government took over the schools.

Wow!
Back in '79, as a class assignment for a university class I travelled into the city to take photos of the Chrysler building's interior and exterior. I borrowed my dad's Nikon camera to perform this task.
As I entered the main elevator lobby of the Chrysler building, I took out the camera to take some photos. A security guard immediately pulled me to the side and confiscated my camera. I was then escorted up to one of the top floors to a patent attorney's office and read the riot act. Fortunately for me, once I explained the task I was assigned, he offered me several glossy photo books on the design and construction of the tower and instructed the security officer to return my camera as I exited the building. The professional glossy documents were not accepted for credit with the assignment, excuse denied. I only received credit for the written portion of the assignment and never received the glossy material back. Harumph.
A favorite scene for me, as well.
I love this kind of thing (old New Yorker, born and bred) and was digging the dirigibles, and the Staten Island ferries clips, too.
