There’s a place for Steven Spielberg, and apparently it’s on New York’s Upper West Side in the 1950s. A casting call has gone out for a remake of “West Side Story,” written by Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Kushner, author of Spielberg’s terrific “Lincoln” screenplay and, of course, “Angels in America.”
It’s a pro-forma casting call because, in the end, the new “West Side Story” is going to need stars. Big names. And because of the setting and the time we are in, it’s going to need actual Puerto Ricans or Latinos for the parts of characters like Maria, Anita, and Bernardo. There will be no fudging this in 2018. The casting call says in capital letters: MUST BE ABLE TO SPEAK SPANISH.

Most of the best stories were written hundreds, even thousands of years ago, including all the "original" stories of the movies they are remaking. But writers with talent and skill can and do breathe new life into them.
The reason Hollywood remakes movies is NOT because the best stories have been written, but because there is less risk in producing a presold product.
Let’s see Spielberg create a hijab-wearing Muslim female lead character, who then does lots of lip-locking making out with some infidel boy.

Agreed, but there is the occasional exception. For example, I think both True Grits were excellent.

But Tony Kushner is working on the script, so I guess this version will be even more left-wing.
I can't see much point in remaking it. It was so much a product of the Eisenhower-Kennedy era.

As far as PC - just how many of them were really just plain white people, anyway? I know Rita Moreno sat in for alot of “exotic” roles because she’s so Italian and that can be utilized, but anyone else?

And since the original was a 1950s sort of version of ROMEO & JULIET, so much of the original Broadway play ( which was translated to the screen! ) is obsolete, I guess that this POS shall be rewritten and done badly.

Rita Moreno IS a Puerto Rican, but she was a GREAT actress, singer, and dancer! Nobody, even remotely, today, can compare with her.

Thank you for clarifying that. I assumed that the actual words “illegal immigrant” would signal that I was not talking about Puerto Ricans. But you know what they say about assumptions.
