My brat cousins always got nice pricy gifts from Santa. I figured it out really early in life.
Oh, I wish Mrs. Shaw, my fourth grade teacher had been on the “never to be discussed” team. It was the last day of school before Christmas break. She was getting ready to talk about something Christmas-related. She began by asking, “Oh, before I talk about this, I better ask: does anyone here still believe in Santa Claus?” I was confused by her question, but as I slowly looked around the room, I saw that not a single kid raised their hand. Then I knew that I’d look like a fool if I “still believed in Santa Claus”, so I didn’t raise my hand. I just spent the rest of the day quietly figuring it all out in my head. I remember feeling betrayed, but mostly sad that the joyful belief had died.
