Many people who follow the ketogenic diet (a.k.a. keto) are obsessed with its ability to help you lose weight quicklyand keep it off. Now, new research has found that the low-carb diet may have one especially huge perk going for it: It might burn 10 times more fat than other diets.
Thats the major finding from research published in the journal Diabetes & Metabolic Syndrome: Clinical Research & Reviews. For the study, scientists took 30 adults who had been diagnosed with metabolic syndrome, a group of health conditions that increase the risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. They then randomly put them in three groups: One group ate a ketogenic diet but didnt exercise, another ate a standard American diet and didnt exercise, and a third that ate a standard American diet and exercised for 30 minutes a day for up to five days a week.
Heres what they found: In 10 weeks, the group that was on the ketogenic diet had significant changes in their weight, body fat percentage, BMI, hemoglobin A1c (a test that measures a persons blood sugar), and ketones (the result of your body burning fat for energy). Their resting metabolic rate, which is the rate that your body body burns energy when youre not doing anything, was more than 10 times that of people who ate a standard diet. All variables for the ketogenic group out-performed those of the exercise and non-exercise groups, the researchers wrote in the study. In case youre not familiar with it, the keto diet is a high-fat, low-carb diet that encourages followers to get a moderate amount of protein. Carbs are generally replaced with fats, and its thought that this shifts your body into a metabolic state known as ketosis.
The keto diet generally shuns sugar, processed foods, low-fat foods, grains and gluten, high-carb fruit, and vegetable oils. Instead, followers are encouraged to eat plenty of non-starchy vegetables, lean meats and fish, full-fat dairy, and nuts and seeds.
Its worth pointing out that this study is small and it focused on people with a health conditionnot otherwise healthy people. Still, the findings are definitely worth thinking about if you've been mulling over going keto.

fruit is pure sugar. Carrots are pure sugar. I ate meat, eggs, cheese and lettuce. Drank water and coffee. Blood pressure and cholesterol improved.

It would be terrible to lose weight while pregnant if you were very thin. I had a few extra pounds that vanished while pregnant. It was right after I started eating low carb. I also did HIIT running barefoot uphill for the first 2 trimesters. It was fun except for the shin splints. But I couldnt eat carbs, it grossed me out.
I lost 40lbs in 6 months and kept it off. Easiest thing I have ever done, but it’s more of a lifestyle change. Started bringing some carbs back in just low portions and doing well. So happy I tried it and was able to stick with it..

It’s suspected that high carb snacking is the cause of type 2 diabetes. The fat storage cycle is interrupted by constant high insulin levels which in turn blocks insulin receptors in cells.

Did you know that human newborns and exclusively breastfed babies are in ketosis? 1 I am a dietitian, with two years of intensive postgraduate training in nutrition, and I didnt realise this until just over a month ago. The fact that human babies are naturally in ketosis is an inconvenient truth because it implies that ketosis (which also occurs when fasting or eating a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet) is not only a natural metabolic state for human infants, but that its probably beneficial too. Nature seldom does something without a reason, so its likely that ketosis may confer some kind of evolutionary advantage to human infants. Research suggests that it may be one of the main factors behind the development of the large human brain. 2

Babies thrive under a ketogenic metabolism
Some people, even some scientists who study ketogenic metabolism, have the idea that ketogenesis is somehow abnormal, or exceptional; an adaptation for emergencies only. We disagree.
One reason we think a ketogenic metabolism is normal and desirable, is that human newborns are in ketosis. Despite the moderate sugar content of human breast milk, breastfeeding is particularly ketogenic. This period of development is crucial, and there is extensive brain growth during it.
Although the composition of breast milk can be affected by diet [1], it is reasonable to assume that breast milk has always been ketogenic, and this is not an effect of modernisation.
When the brain is in its period of highest growth, and when the source of food is likely to be close to what it evolved to be for that period, ketones are used to fuel that growth.
If nothing else, this suggests that learning is well supported by a ketogenic metabolism. It is also consistent with the ability of ketogenic diets to treat a variety of seemingly unrelated brain disorders and brain trauma.
In brief
Newborn infants are in ketosis. This is their normal state.
Breastfeeding is particularly ketogenic (compared to formula feeding).
Breastfeeding longer (up to a point) is associated with better health outcomes.
This suggests the hypothesis that weaning onto a ketogenic diet would be healthier than weaning onto a high-carb diet.

I was taking 4 glyburide/metformin pills a day and was looking at Victoza because my A1C was too high. I got on the diet for several reasons including my Type II diabetes.
I started it seriously in July, down to one pill a day and hopefully get off entirely in the next six months. But I have made great progress. I also walk 2.5 miles a day and hope to get back to three soon.
I eat a lot of “taco salad”.
Until dropping off temporarily for Christmas I was on it for 2-3 months, and really loved it. And I look forward to jumping back onboard in a few days.
What I have found helpful is "1 spicy Italian sausage link = 1 meal". The sausage links cost about $.80 each, which makes for a pretty low cost meal. We boil them in water, put some holes in with a fork, and then finish them off in a skillet with olive oil.
I'll have an occasional hard boiled egg or stick of celery to mix things up a little.
BTW, the above sausages must be eaten without any type of carb-containing sauce (maybe a dash of Tabasco).

Or, try roast pork loin (I can generally find it under $2/pound) and broccoli or green beans or brussel sprouts with lots of butter or bacon fat.
I would agree you don’t need to be on keto and i don’t plan to be once I meet my weight goals (although I plan to stay low carb) but really you dont need to consume carbs, your body is perfectly capable of producing all the carbs it needs.
