Pretty impressive.
Many people who follow the ketogenic diet (a.k.a. keto) are obsessed with its ability to help you lose weight quicklyand keep it off. Now, new research has found that the low-carb diet may have one especially huge perk going for it: It might burn 10 times more fat than other diets.
Thats the major finding from research published in the journal Diabetes & Metabolic Syndrome: Clinical Research & Reviews. For the study, scientists took 30 adults who had been diagnosed with metabolic syndrome, a group of health conditions that increase the risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. They then randomly put them in three groups: One group ate a ketogenic diet but didnt exercise, another ate a standard American diet and didnt exercise, and a third that ate a standard American diet and exercised for 30 minutes a day for up to five days a week.
Heres what they found: In 10 weeks, the group that was on the ketogenic diet had significant changes in their weight, body fat percentage, BMI, hemoglobin A1c (a test that measures a persons blood sugar), and ketones (the result of your body burning fat for energy). Their resting metabolic rate, which is the rate that your body body burns energy when youre not doing anything, was more than 10 times that of people who ate a standard diet. All variables for the ketogenic group out-performed those of the exercise and non-exercise groups, the researchers wrote in the study. See what happened when one woman tried the ketogenic diet:
In case youre not familiar with it, the keto diet is a high-fat, low-carb diet that encourages followers to get a moderate amount of protein. Carbs are generally replaced with fats, and its thought that this shifts your body into a metabolic state known as ketosis.
The keto diet generally shuns sugar, processed foods, low-fat foods, grains and gluten, high-carb fruit, and vegetable oils. Instead, followers are encouraged to eat plenty of non-starchy vegetables, lean meats and fish, full-fat dairy, and nuts and seeds.
Its worth pointing out that this study is small and it focused on people with a health conditionnot otherwise healthy people. Still, the findings are definitely worth thinking about if you've been mulling over going keto.
When doing this, it is good to watch blood acid level so as to not create ketone acidosis, common to diabetics.
Yes, liver glucose stores are gone in about 24 hrs.
Fried Pork Skins = my potato chips (my lipid profile beats that of my 35 year old doctor) Be sure not to get the BBQ version, it’s loaded with MSG
Oh, thank you so much for the website and information!! I’ve tried low carb eating once or twice before, but I struggled with breakfast: I’m a devoted cereal eater and am not crazy about having much meat...and I can barely stomach eggs (occasionally scrambled; no other style). I’ll do my homework this time around and have some other options lined up in advance. Your information will definitely help. Thanks again!
I had epilepsy for 15 yrs and know how much my brain needs fat. I also now suffer from low blood sugar so I am a bacon, cheesesteak, pizza lover. My pizza shop has a gluten free (rice dough) pizza but I haven’t ordered it yet. I should. what time is it? They’re open!
This is essentially the Atkins type diet, although Atkins never really advocated high fat. His focus was really on carbs. The initial phase was for 2 weeks only and the long term goal was to learn how much carbs your body could handle.
My solution to the “Atkins flue” was to simply reduce the carbs gradually until I got to a stage where I lost a few lbs. and was no longer gaining weight.
Within one month, all my lipids went to healthy levels. I increased the fats: organic butter, whole milk, nuts, and EVOO and Proteins. I had followed the AM. Heart Association/DASH diet advice for years. These were the first normal readings that I had for 25 years.
Conceptually, the sugar/carbs are like an addiction, and when you quit cold turkey, you’ll have withdrawal symptoms. Using the gradual reduction, my body adjusted without major problems.
My goal was not really weight loss per se, but simply to achieve healthier lipid profile without Rx.

What is wrong with canned food?
Mostly veggies like canned spinach, lima beans, peas.
No fruit will kill you off sooner.
Mine went from 8.9 to 6.1 in about a year. I hated that Metformin too, last batch I ordered had a “rotten” smell and that’s when I told my doctor, no more. I watch (eliminate) my white foods (white bread, potatoes, rice) and fill up on salads, nuts, soups, eggs, yogurt, beans, meat, cheese. And I have whole dairies, none of the non-fat tasteless garbage. I actually LOVE eating like this, and don’t miss the scones and mashed potatoes.
My cardiologist supports a low carb diet.
Nothing wrong with canned or frozen veggies.
In fact: Canned tomatoes are probably better nutritionally than most so called fresh tomatoes in a super market.
Canned tomatoes offer something that fresh can’t. Tomatoes are preserved using heat, which releases lycopenea carotenoid that may help prevent prostate and breast cancer. And canned tomatoes are super-easy: they’re already peeled, chopped and ready to cook with!
The doc was talking about the prepackaged/cooked foods with 20 ingredients which have 15 syllables and the rest is sugar and carbs pretending to be a healthy meal because of all the enriched vitamins.
(my lipid profile beats that of my 35 year old doctor)
My wife’s lipid profile and other lab profiles beats her 40 year something jock doctor and acording to him the female jocks in his practice.
we do know they're mostly impotent by the number of Viagra ads..
Yeah its got to be a food lifestyle change.
If you’ve got an actual male husband he’s a real saint to put up with your crap.
Exactly why Dr. Stillman called it the Stillman Water Diet.
We cant have cheese, sour cream, and butter for dinner. Yes I know you can have those but you cant make a meal out of them. He doesnt eat eggs or peanuts. Hell eat bacon. Have you seen the price of it lately? Really hard to make a meal out of almost pure meat. Our grocery bill is high anyway but on that diet it was astronomical.
Keto actually isn’t Adkins. they’re both low carb but Keto is a bit more strict recommending less then 20 grams of carbs a day. it also recommends a diet of 80% fat and 20% protein. Ive been on it since Aug 1st and have lost 60lbs and dropped 6 pants sizes. I do miss beer though.
