At least 56 cases of mumps have been reported in Florida in 2017, a significant rise over prior years but well below outbreaks in other states,
which have reported hundreds of infections this year.
The 2017 count includes confirmed and probable cases, said Brad Dalton, a health department spokesman.
Dalton said the health department publishes a monthly surveillance report for mumps and other diseases,
though the most current report is for November and counts 54 cases.
The Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccine is the best way to prevent all three conditions, he said.
Yet, in at least half of the cases, the infected person had a documented history of the MMR vaccination, according to the December advisory for physicians.
The actual number of cases, however, could be higher, in part because some people who get the disease have very mild or no symptoms,
which include fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, loss of appetite and swollen and tender salivary glands under the ears
which causes the telltale puffy cheeks and swollen jaw.
Symptoms typically appear 16 to 18 days after infection, but the incubation period for the virus that causes mumps can range from 12 to 25 days.
Most people with mumps recover completely in a few weeks.

High vaccination rates for mumps help limit outbreaks, but even those who are vaccinated can still get the virus, the CDC says.
The agency recommends children get two doses of MMR vaccine, which provides 88 percent protection against mumps.(Emphasis mine)
Funny, they have more Puerto Ricans than in the past 5 years too..
Ain’t diversity wonderful?
Invaders bringing in their bio weapons.
Mumps infection not limited to Florida alone
Federal health officials estimate that about 5,000 people have had mumps this year, with the highest numbers reported in Arkansas, Missouri, New York, Texas and Washington state.
In 2016, more than 6,000 cases of mumps were reported.
Yes, there is the possibility that migration may have contributed to the increase.
Trump rhymes with mumps sort of, probably his fault.
Funny, they have more Puerto Ricans than in the past 5 years too.
My local fast casual lunch place here in Jacksonville, FL is quickly being Hispanized. Use to be a diverse bunch of workers but no more.
In before the antivax dumbasses
Wasted all his time with the Russians and ignored mumps, eh?
Just my thoughts.
Two words: Syrian refugees
Puerto Rico has a very solid vax’ed population. Higher than quite a few US states.
I hope the anti-vaxx crowd is happy.
Hey! Modern medicine!
How’s about we finally get smart about viruses! Maybe actually cure something?! At least come up with a vaccine that has no hint of long term deleterious effects so the hand wringers won’t abstain and allow these “anomalies”
Here’s a hint, get the government and government regulated insurance companies out or your business! AND STOP CHANGING THE OATH! Last change did nothing but cave to the lgbtxy711 crowd!
.02, YMMV

Diversity is the gift that keeps on giving.
Every time I go into the big mall in Tampa I see more and more full burkas. Last time (two weeks ago) I saw at least 3 groups of women with burkas. The time before that it was only 1. The time before that it was none. Same at Busch Gardens, Costco, etc.
Can we guarantee a $20k/yr. full-time job for everyone of those folks to return to the island? There’s plenty to do now. Make them work 50 hours a week. 5 and a half days. Too tired to get in trouble.
That's why I included the incubation time and the physical symptoms from the original article
Those anti-bacterial wipes for the carts at various stores won't do anything for a virus !
I imagine exposure will be increased after the holidays, after the college crowd expose family members over Christmas.(That happened to me) Being forewarned is being fore-armed !

Yes, diversity brings in diverse diseases once conquered, new crimes , terror suspects, mass muderers of innocent soft targets and other fascinating aspects.
