The device enters rooms and chambers through a 3.5 centimetre hole drilled through a wall by researchers outside.
It is made up of two robots, a tubular machine equipped with a high definition camera and a probe that explores the structure via a small, inflatable blimp.
After the first robot has taken a series of reconnaissance images, the drone is pushed through the drilled hole before inflating itself within the chamber.
Packed with an array of sensors and cameras, the remote-controlled device collects data and takes photos or video without causing damage to the fragile building.
After it has completed its mission, the floating probe returns to its docking station and deflates before it is extracted via the the same tube it entered in.
The discovery was made using 'cosmic ray imaging' in which subatomic particles that naturally rain down from the sky are used to map buildings like an X-ray scan.
Now scientists hope to use a new minimally-invasive robot to explore why chambers such as these were built.
The project has been initiated by ScanPyramids...

Ozymandias

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.
This must be where they stored the grain
For I am but the Current Cowboy
In the Boat of Ra.

wouldn’t rubble be prone to subsidence due to great vertical pressure due to great load? and sand be prone to some compaction, as well as liquefaction in inclement weather and escaping through narrow cracks in outer walls over time? in fact sand due to lack of rigidity of form could redirect the load vectors to the outer walls from the inside, introducing a new collapse mode? just wondering, not a civil engineer.
Hawass is partially rehabilitated? from what? i have not followed his career closely (except for what imho was some earlier tendency towards flashiness).
oh. he’s back??
Now I ride with the mocking and friendly ghouls on the night-wind, and play by day amongst the catacombs of Nephren-Ka in the sealed and unknown valley of Hadoth by the Nile.
I know that light is not for me, save that of the moon over the rock tombs of Neb, nor any gaiety save the unnamed feasts of Nitokris beneath the Great Pyramid; yet in my new wildness and freedom I almost welcome the bitterness of alienage.
For although nepenthe has calmed me, I know always that I am an outsider; a stranger in this century and among those who are still men.
This I have known ever since I stretched out my fingers to the abomination within that great gilded frame; stretched out my fingers and touched a cold and unyielding surface of polished glass.
“The corbels at the top of the grand gallery have been found to ba hanging on by a fraction of an inch on one end, suggesting the structure was exposed to major stress such as an earthquake of unusual strength. OTOH, it may have happened during the event that cracked the granite blocks used to roof the King’s Chamber and the relieving chambers above it.”

OTOH, it may have happened during the event postulated by C. Dunn - an explosion when some of the ingredients used in generating some sort of power didn’t mix correctly or some such. That idea accounts for the scorch marks in the Kings Chamber and the shifted granite blocks.
Hawass, as the official Director of Egyptian Antiquities, was an ardent supporter of the status quo. No new ideas, no new exploration permitted - other than by his approval. In short, he exercised rigid, absolute control over all things pertaining to Egyptian archeology; his way or the highway - which could mean being banned from Egypt entirely.
Perhaps now the authorities will permit using bio-thermoluminescence dating to get a better idea of exactly when the pyramids were built - the only test done returned a date on one block seam in Menkaure’s pyramid several hundred years earlier than believed - which, if true, will upset the entire standard dating of Ancient Egypt. Hawass stopped this testing, banning its use anywhere in Egypt as Menkaure’s pyramid is the ‘newest’ of the three at Giza ...
I want them to find the Star Gate.

What in the world do you mean? No one has died in this article.
See? Until this single person dies - now in total control of the research and the “facts” of whatever will be found from any research, and in total control of access to the foundations and rocks and tombs and quarries where “new facts” may be found - there will never be any chance of different theories or different “facts” being being discovered.
Do I exaggerate? Not really. The men and women he appoints and has indoctrinated in many other departments and universities and labs and museums have been indoctrinated as well - but their ideas are often slightly different, sometimes correctly different. Sometimes incorrect. But never exactly the same. Few important new scientific discoveries are made after the new challenging, interesting, exploratory young scientist has become the old, experienced, entrenched and established scientist.
The same process of group-think and locking out opposing ideas happens in nuclear physics (fusion in particular), in economic theory, in global warming propaganda and research, in biology, etc.
And yet again, “science” can only advance one death at a time.

I suspect it's a cynical statement about how science advances. In order for new ideas to advance, the old guard clinging to the past must die off. A cynical idea, but largely true,
He was under some kind of pressure when Morsi first took over, then he resigned, then he was at some point charged with graft and corruption, but now is back out from under a cloud, but not supremo over antiquities (which is good).
Only if imagination can move millions of tons of rock.
