ALBANY, N.Y. -- The "Son of Sam" serial killer who terrorized New York City 40 years ago is in the hospital. New York state prison officials said Tuesday that 64-year-old David Berkowitz was transferred to a hospital from the upstate maximum-security prison where he is serving a life sentence.
Officials would not comment on why he was in the hospital, but the New York Post and the Times-Union of Albany reported that he was transferred to undergo heart surgery.

the 44 caliber killer. He ruined lives. His conversion to Christianity did not give back those lives.
But we all die and on the way if you repent of your sins you are open to God’s forgiveness.
I hate to sound cynical but I don’t believe him. He only converted once in a place where he needed some kind of something to hold onto to get through it.
Like someone else said, ‘I hope it’s true’ but truthfully, I doubt it.
Not my decision to make. God knows the heart.
That has got to be a miserable existence. I was about 12 years old that spring of 1968, when RFK was killed.
The accused assassin is STILL locked up, w/o much chance of parole. Parole may not be out of the question though.
I never thought Mark David Chapman; aka The man who killed John Lennon would get as close to parole as he has. Chapman has been denied parole at least nine different times.
Last time in 2016, it almost happened. I suspect he will be out at some point, when those still alive do not see Lennon in the same mythologic light as many Baby Boomers still do.
Same with Son of Sam, if he survives. The prison system may wish to free itself from the expensive, ongoing care of an elderly prisoner. Plus, less people today see the Kennedy Family in the same fantastic, way as we all used to.
Let’s say Manson was 99% evil and 1% good. Why can’t God in the afterlife throw out the 99% and rebuild the rest?
Sorry. I won't forgive him.
But keep in mind that he may have traded one obsession (killing people) with another. Just saying
If Chapman shot Yoko instead, he would have been paroled years ago.
Some Mayors (back then) would have given him the Key To The City. Yoko is one of those people who seems to thrive on being hated.
Here’s a great interview he did a few years ago:

Did ‘Son of Sam’ really act alone?
Some original detectives wonder if there’s something or someone they missed

The Devil in David Berkowitz

God sees everything.
Read the Ultimate Evil. Berkowitz was part of a cult called the Process Church (Manson connection also, IIRC) and he was not the only trigger puller. I believe his conversion. Usually fake conversions are intended to get out of jail. Not Berkowitz.
David Berkowitz derailed his sentencing for the ‘Son of Sam’ murders by fighting with his guards and then entering the courtroom chanting that the last woman he murdered was “a whore.”
Berkowitz’s behavior forced embarrassed judges and district attorneys to agree to his defense attorneys request for a postponement of sentencing for a new psychiatric examination.
“Stacy was a whore, Stacy was a whore,” Berkowitz chanted, in the sing-song with which children have taunted one another on playgrounds for generations, as he came into the courtroom.
up
Neysa Moskowitz, the mother of Son of Sam's last victim, Stacy, shouted back across the packed Brooklyn courtroom: “You animal. How dare you say that.”
Robert Violante, who was sitting in a parked car with Stacy, 20, last July 31 and was partially blinded by the bullets from Berkowitz’s 44-cal. revolver, leaped to his feet and yelled at Berkowitz: “You creep, you should get killed.”
From what I read, he was possessed.
That must have been an awesome deliverance.
Whatever Berkowicz has, it’s probably less than what Jodie Arias has.
I read some on him. He was into some sick, evil stuff do doubt about it. Even in prison he still practiced some form of Satanism. It all backfired on him. Don’t remember how it happened but someone lead him to Christ and it turned him around. His life improved, he said. Really only God knows his heart. I hope his conversion was real.
Friends on the outside run it on his behalf.
My best friends husband, who is former NYPD) helped arrest Berkowitz and sat in the cell with him when he was arrested. He said he was a total LOON!
Thank you for the link. I was not aware of his conversion (here it is again): http://www.ariseandshine.org/
Apparently the guy is legitimately crazy, but is lucid, coherent and functional as long as he’s in a controlled environment and taking medication under supervision. I suspect that’s part of the reason why he does not apply for parole.
There is somewhat of a difference between an obsession whose fruit is evil and one whose is good.
He has seemed consistent about his faith and appears legitimately remorseful, living to atone for his deeds.
If he is sincere, then having murder on his soul has surely been a heavy load. If he's obsessed about compensating, that's how he deals with it. Many would say tough cookies his victims don't have a life at all, but he can't go back in time. It's what it is.
The Messiah is the guy who can love the unlovable who have committed such horrible acts that noone in society would want anything to do with them ever, just in case.
Perhaps David Berkowitz has been able to reach the unreachable and unlovable, because he himself is the last person anyone would love. God knows the heart.
