Justice League Is Crashing and Burning. Will Anyone Survive?
Weekly Standard ^ | 24 Nov 2017 | Jonathan Last

Wonder Woman will probably make it out okay. But everyone else associated with this movie is toast.

One of the rituals of Thanksgiving weekend is heading out to see a movie. And so, with that in mind, let me do you a mitzvah: Do not see Justice League. Under any circumstances do not go to see Justice League.

Justice League is the movie I’ve been waiting for since I was a kid. It’s the comic book series I loved the most and the team I always wanted to see on the big screen. I say this so that you’ll know my priors. But I also want you to understand that I’ve reached the point in life where even the prospect of a cherished childhood comic book being turned into a movie no longer gives me any great excitement. It’s not cynicism, exactly. It’s just that I understand what I like and I understand the economics of the movie business and so I understand that movies like Justice League aren’t made for people like me. And I accept these basic economic facts.

The problem with DC comic book movies Vs. Marvel is that they are too bleak and dark

The funny thing is that DC was historically the bright, bouncy comic universe. Even the early, early dark Batman (1939) didn't stay that way long. It's hard to be that dark a knight with some pre-teen orphan in a red, yellow and green suit is tagging along constantly.

If we include the old Fawcett titles (Marvel Family, Spy Smasher, Ibis) they weren't dark either. The 1950s Captain Marvelk was VERY cartoony.

Marvel really came into its own in the '60s, and starting with Spiderman, their were far more angst ridden than the 1950s and 60s Superman who is constantly playing pranks on Jimmy and Lois, and crosses swords with Bizarro, Suzy and Mr. Mxyzptlk as often as he did with Brainiac or Lex Luthor.

The problem started when Warner bought DC in the early '70s, always with an eye on the movies and NEVER going to comic book talent to get the job dome on the big screen.

Keep Batman dark, if you must, and a handful of others like Phanton Stranger and the Spectre. Superman, Flash, Captain Marvel, Elongated Man (or Plastic Man, since DC got his rights) are fun.

If DC wants a fresh start, try the Legion of Superheroes, start with them in the 31st century, and have them go back in time chasing a supervillain(s) who are endangering the space-time continuum or whatever. Keep it light, especially if you redo the wedding between Bouncing Boy and Triplicate Girl.

Cyborg was NOT a member of the original Justice League...there are some mock-ups of the theater poster floating around with Martian Manhunter or Green Lantern photo-shopped in...even using the negro GL would have satisfied both fans and SJW’s. Interesting to note that WB just released new banners and posters to the theaters with Superman on them. The suits blew this one...badly.

Marvel will survive. Which really is the problem, DC is trying to be Marvel, they should be DC.,/i>

Yup. And I would aim for the Silver Age DC. Things got to crazy after "Crisis on Infinite Earths".

EVERYONE says that the three-hour ‘extended cut’ of ‘Batman vs. Superman’ was much better than the version released to theaters...suits wanted a shorter film.

Hasn’t the comic book thing been about done to death?

Marvel killed it off for me with all those superhero teams that seemed to be interchangeable.

DC came up with the Justice League heroes before Marvel came up with theirs, but by now they seem pretty old fashioned.

Years ago, a Superman or Batman movie was a big deal. Not any more.

One thing Marvel has going for it at least is humor. Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill just aren't as funny as Robert Downey Jr.

Snyder ruined Watchmen by making Rorschach something he really wasn’t. That and his need for software porn to be in the movie, for no reason. His style is okay, but his story-telling (as in changing things) leaves a lot to be desired.

I was planning on skipping Justice League anyway, but seeing Ezra Miller trying to get Gal Gadot to say some crap about patriarchy (see Diversity and Comics YouTube Channel for the video), I’ll give it a hard pass.

If you don’t go see the movie fifteen times, buy the merchandise, the dvd and the extra dvd specials, you are not the demographic they want ...Their favorite demographic pays no rent, utilities etc..All that extra money, what to do,what to do?????

Their assessment is utter rubbish. Saw the movie, better than Thor Ragnok, and a bunch of other Marvel dreck. Good story, solid acting performances, funny, lots of action. I don't know what impact the change of directors due to the suicide of his son had on the film but the continuity went well.

As for the ludicrous "Justice League is bombing financially" line, that is a total fabrication. As of today the film has already made $147,316,643 domestic and $185,000,000 foreign for a grand total of: $332,316,643 in just 8 days.

Would WB liked to have made more? Sure but its opening weekend projections were only off by less than $7 million dollars so all in all it felt within reasonable expectations and is still doing well financially.

It strikes me as critics wanting this movie to fail and intentionally trying to manipulate/prevent possible viewers from seeing it because the "critics" have a hidden agenda. We all know the "critics" are opposed to "truth, justice and the American way".

Gal Gadot is what I call winsome. Pretty in the kind of way that doesn't make other women hate her. I remember in the WW movie, when she's walking across the No Man's Land and the Nazis are shooting away at her, I thought, the most unrealistic thing about this scene is the idea that any man would be shooting at a woman who looks like this, and is dressed like this, and is walking in their direction. I thought it should have just shown a bunch of German soldiers just lowering their weapons and staring at her with their mouths open.

Yeah, me too but I still have a fond place in my heart for those comic books of my youth.

When a movie follows the book (Wonder Woman is an example) I am usually pleased to support it.

They couldn’t make a better costume for the flash. It looks like it was homemade.

It was a good movie. I don’t care what anyone says. For a comic book movie, based on fantasy, it was good.
