As the Oklahoma Sooners are hoping to clinch a spot in the College Football Playoffs, a head coach is sending a message to the team.
While OU was on its way to a blowout win over Kansas, quarterback Baker Mayfield stunned coaches when he made a crude gesture on the sidelines.
After throwing a three-yard touchdown pass to Mark Andrews to put OU up 28-3 in the third quarter, Mayfield twice grabbed his crotch and yelled obscenities at the Kansas bench, all caught on camera by ESPN.
After the 41-3 win, Mayfield issued an apology for his actions during the game.
"What I did today, tonight was unacceptable. I am a competitive player but what I did is unacceptable so I apologize. It's disrespectful, it's not the example I want to set, it's not the legacy I want to leave at OU, so I truly do apologize," Mayfield said.
On Monday afternoon, OU head coach Lincoln Riley announced that Mayfield would be punished for his actions.
Riley said that Mayfield will not be listed as a captain or start in Saturday's game against West Virginia. However, he said Mayfield will likely play during the game.
I don’t like Mayfield at all, but OU didn’t start this stuff last week.
He won’t play for a few downs but Riley is NOT going to let WV beat them.
I think it cost Mayfield the Heisman. He was pissed because the thugs wouldn’t shake his hand. I don’t know what they were pissed about.
Because he was white.
Got it! That and the fact they’ve won 1 game this year.
Classless Clown Show.
They’ve been attending NFL Manners Class?
I heard comments from the ESPN team warning pro teams would be scared away. Rather, attracted to, imho. They like a little fire.
“Pride cometh before a fall.” The Good Book.
No, ‘before destruction’ a haughty spirit before a fall.
You've been here a while now. Still liking it?
He's never done anything like what Mayfield did Saturday, so what are you talking about?
He was also the victim of a late hit to the head area by a black KU defender ( yeah it was called but there should have been an ejection )
They said that about Flute when he entered the NFL. He had a great career.
Thanks for the accurate correction......
You’re welcome.
It was a class act all around. At the coin flip the Jaysquawk captain wouldn’t shake hands with him.
After the coin toss Mayfield extended his hand to the Kansas group and they just put their hands behind themselves and lowered their heads.
It has always been the custom to shake hands and wish the other side a good game. They obviously decided otherwise.
Kansas must have a class teaching new kneelers.
I had wondered, thanks. So they set the tone, not Mayfield.
Yep!
Won’t start. Second snap though...
