Calling All Freeper Gearheads!
Let's talk about first cars! What was you first vehicle? What did you like most about the car? What drove you nuts? Do you wish that you still had it?
Gearhead Ping.
What was you first vehicle? ‘51 Merc. Acquisition price...$60. Everything. Definitely not.
1970 Plymouth Valiant
It performed its primary purpose for which my parents gave it to me splendidly. I remained a virgin while I had it.
My dad was an electrical contractor and did work at the American Motors plants in Wisconsin. First car I drove was a Rambler American red with white convertible top. At the time is was a fun car
like this...
White 1971 Vega. The good... It started. The bad... It was a Vega.
Didn't notice until after we bought it that the rubber stripping on one side didn't match the rubber stripping on the other side, i.e. the car had been T-boned.
It crapped out after only a couple of years.
I ended up taking the bus around LA for two years until I could get up enough money to buy my own car new.
Now that 2nd car I loved.
‘53 Chevy convertible...
Paid $37.50 for my half with a friend...
Had holes all through the floorboard...Didn’t even have to stop to pee when out drinking beer...Just let it run out through the floor...LOL
1968 Mercury Cougar XR 7.
Traded it for a 1986 Pontiac Grand Prix. .......
Still kick myself over that shrewd move.....
RLTW
1960 Chevy Corvair. Only cost me $50. Ralph Nader was right about this one. I wouldn’t want it now because I don’t like oil slicks in my garage.
MG Midget. It belonged to my brother but he gave it to me after he wrecked it. I bought a donor car and combined the two to make it whole again.
What a piece of crap!
I bought it used from the original owner.
I still think it was the best car I ever owned.
1966 Porsche 911.
First car - 67 Chevy Belair
Favorite car - 71 Malibu SS
Weirdest car - 75 Hornet with 76 front end and 74 rear clip....
It was a 74/75/76 Hornet...
I called it the Green Dragon, it was green and usually had something draggin.
I drove an old ‘57 Dodge Coronet, white with big fins, while in high school. First car I had when I got out of school was a ‘67 Cutlass with a GREAT reverb speaker in the back. Got off active duty in late ‘70 and got a Camero 350 Rally Sport, split bumper, gold metallic.
1953 MG TD, in 1964
I started out well, it's been downhill since.
1966 Nissan Prince. Bought it for $45 bucks in 1971. At the time everything was Datsun here in the US. I think some Navy guy brought it over on a ship or something.
Needed brake pads and I knew a guy who worked on brakes and he relined the brake shoes.
Let a buddy in auto shop class give it a tune up. He failed to tighten the distributer correctly. About a block from school it died wouldn’t restart. I had it pushed and popped the clutch only to have the distributer spin around taking all the wires with it and destroying it.
Knew a Japanese exchange student from church who was back in Japan. She lived down the street from a Nissan dealership. She mailed me another distributor and I had a neighbor install it, ex Navy mechanic type. Ran good then for awhile.
Sold it for $300 and bought a 1962 VW Bug.
1966 VW super Vee bug. Loved the car but gave me problems.
