Pop Culture, Commercials, and White Guys

It isn’t difficult to find people complaining about how “people of color” are treated in America today. Turn on the TV, and you’ll see highly-paid NFL players lamenting this. White liberals are constantly bashing “whiteness”, and attending lectures and classes wherein white people are variously termed devils, demons, oppressors, or some other thing. It is the same for men in general, as opposed to women.

Whites, and white men in particular, are generally seen as squares. They can’t dance, can’t sing, are uncool, lame, stupid, and as the famous movie title once explained for us, white men can’t jump. If white men do anything interesting or cool, it will be seen as cultural appropriation, denounced as racism, or become an Obama “you didn’t build that” situation. White people either have no culture (that link is interesting, because many white American liberals genuinely believe that they have no culture), or their culture is based primarily on white supremacy.

I just keep my eyes on that finish line (while keeping them peeled for other opportunities), but I’m still decades away.

well done article. all one needs to do is watch a few minutes of tv commercials to see how white men are perceived by liberals.

I don't watch much television, but locally a billboard for counseling services has popped up, and the theme is "communication and listening" with the fellow absorbed in his smartphone and his wife looking annoyed. THAT'S a great guy to make the fellow feel like he's going to get a fair shake.

I’ve noticed that the local newscasters here are increasingly minorities, but that probably reflects the flight of the Anglos from the NYC metro area. However, it also reflects that same trend; who gets their news from TV anymore? With smartphones, goofy lines like “today’s weather coming up in 10 minutes” sounds like something from the previous century - because it is.

There are companies I will not buy from based on their interracial (black men/white female only) advertising, or omitting whites altogesther. Under Armor, etc. I will not buy.

Whites see more racism in advertsing than advertisers think.

If you aren't buying products because they use interracial couples in their advertising, maybe TV sees more racism in you than you think.

And "(black men/white female only)?" Maybe that's just what you see. White man/black woman couples are a lot more common in commercials than they are in real life.

Thank you; I’m grateful to have a job that at least lets me tread water while providing for my family (including health insurance), but I see how so many people have just determined it is too damned expensive to live here in NJ. I feel much worse for the people that can’t even find work.

There was a study done (albeit decades ago) the whites really don’t see race in ads.

I think it's that they get the ad's message whoever is giving it and will probably buy the product whoever is selling it. Minority groups are more likely to think, "Who is this White guy and why is it him telling me this stuff?" Some White people do ask, "Who is this colored person and why isn't a White guy telling me this?" but that's not the demographic advertisers are going for.

In "married couple" commercials you can have a Black or Asian or Latin guy be stupid, so long as the wife is the smart one. That may be where advertising is going -- the same kind of commercials, but White men aren't the stupid ones and the butt of the joke because there aren't any White men in them. Would there be complaints about that?

The "token" black women in commercials.

"I find this really annoying.

In almost EVERY commercial geared towards women (cleaning products, chocolate, yogurt, tampons, headache medicine, weight loss programs, diet foods, cooking products), there is almost always one token black woman, and SHE ALWAYS LOOKS THE SAME.

I always wonder if this annoys black women, and I know it would probably annoy me if I were black. s**t, it annoys me already.

This woman is ALWAYS light-skinned, and she ALWAYS has a light-brown shorter Afro hairstyle. She's always just teetering on the edge of "white". She's always sitting around the dinner table with her three white girlfriends or hanging out at the beach with them eating yogurt, and she always just looks like an ultra-tan white lady with a poofier hairdo.

Because most African American women that I personally know are either medium-skinned or dark-skinned, it seems like blatant racism to me, and they NEVER have commercial actresses with women of this skin type. Has anyone else noticed this?? And if you haven't, just look out for it next time.
