Airplanes passing overhead way up high in the sky. Where is that plane going?

Posted on 09/24/2017 1:44:13 PM PDT by SamAdams76

Perfect day here in Connecticut. Just sitting on my back deck and not watching NFL football. Bonus summer day even though it's officially Autumn now. Yesterday I had gone to the Big E fair in Springfield, MA and ate pounds and pounds of deep-fried things that I never should have eaten. But at least I washed it all down with beer and cider.

Mowed some lawn which is surprisingly still lush and green for this time of year. Some leaves are falling but not many.

But what I did mostly was look up at the deep blue skies where I saw plane after plane passing overhead at 35,000 feet. Skies are so clear that I can make out the entire plane with the naked eye and white contrails flowing behind it. These planes are 7 miles up in the air!

Now I'm in the flight path sometimes for LaGuardia and those planes are usually about 15,000 feet up with no contrails but I pretty much know where they are going. Also get some local traffic to the smaller private plane airstrips in the area. But I never realized there was so much action at 35,000 feet.

I often wonder where those planes are going. And where they are coming from. And who is up on those planes? Might be long forgotten about friends and family members. Might be a celebrity like Pat Benatar or Bobby Orr, the hockey player. Who knows who is up there in those airplanes just 7 miles over my house? Could be anybody, right?

I fly often myself and like to get the window seat where I can gaze down at the ribbons of highway from 35,000 feet up, trying to make out landmarks and such. Hard to do at such heights but every now and then, I'm able to pick out something that I recognize like the skyline of Charlotte, NC or one of the Great Lakes in the midwest. It's fun to look down from that height. Especially when I'm coming over the Rocky Mountains on an intercontinental trip or flying to Hawaii in which I like to be the first one to spot the tiny islands way off in the distance.

But anyhow, I wish there was a way I could figure out information about those airplanes flying so high over my house.

OK, further research showed a NetJets plane - which is a private jet service for executives. Fractional ownership of private jets, apparently. It was headed to Greenwich.

Pretty cool app. It's going to take me some time to fully learn it.

Beats having them fly low over your house.

Thanks Sam! Just downloaded that app. It is super cool. I can’t wait to tell my buddy about this. He sits on his deck all the time and wonders what the planes are and their origination and destination. He will love this app.

In the Fifties, when I was a kid, we went to Glen Lake every Summer. The dunes wewre great! They had these huge Oldsmobile converts with balloon tires that drove you around the dunes. Wonderful

I live in outside of Springfield. Usually those flights are on their way to Europe. They leave NY or New Jersey and fly up towards Newfoundland and across the ocean.

Sometimes I see a massive A380 overhead about 15,000 feet climbing...

British Airway recently started fly A380s into Logan a couple of days a week. They also still fly 747s into Logan as does Lufthansa (which flies the *new* ones).

There's a spot in South Boston (also known as "Southie") that my Dad and I used to go to and hang out (he loved it...he grew up in Southie).

This spot is no more than a half mile from one of the main runways of Logan...a runway that handles 747s.

I used to love watching the 747s fly directly overhead at no more than a few hundred feet. The roar...and the landing gear being so close that you could almost reach up and grab it....was *really* cool!

Although my Dad's gone I just might go back to see the A380s...and to think of him.

I grew up in East Boston just outside Logan Airport. Actually I grew to love the airplanes going over my house. They were so close that I could sometimes make out faces through the windows as the planes were landing. I mean they had to be maybe 200 feet over my house at times. When I got a little older, new rules made the planes come and go more over the ocean more of the time and I missed having those close encounters. But even then, wind directions would still bring them right over my house frequently.

On the morning of July 31, 1973, I was riding my bicycle with heavy fog all around and I heard a large explosion. I was 11 years old. When I heard about the Delta crash later that day, I told everybody that I heard the crash but nobody believed me. But I definitely heard that crash. Still haunts me even to this day.

I think that's why I'm always fascinated with airplanes.

You should have watched the NASCAR race instead. Send a message to the NFL.

It's atomized aluminum oxide. Often mistakenly referred to as chemtrails.

Literally, by definition, a chemtrail.

Have you seen the youtube videos of elevated UV A, UV B...and even UV C? This guy has some. He abruptly stopped taking them a few weeks ago but these videos include readings he’s taken with UV meters and compared to weather apps.

Totally amazing app. I just had an Aer Lingus plane fly over me at 25,000 feet pass over my house on the way to JFK from Dublin. It is apparently 6 minutes away from landing there. I always assumed that the aircraft passing over was headed to LaGuardia but so far, they are all going to JFK.

I lived in Connecticut and in Europe; European flights come right over CT to New York airports.

We used to see them all the time growing up as kids from the ground.

I used to look out my windows and see Connecticut below flying back & forth.

sure just buy a decommissioned Air Force One w/ air-to-air refueling capability and stock the cargo holds with MRE’s and you’re set!

LOL
