Airplanes passing overhead way up high in the sky. Where is that plane going?

Posted on 09/24/2017 1:44:13 PM PDT by SamAdams76

Perfect day here in Connecticut. Just sitting on my back deck and not watching NFL football. Bonus summer day even though it's officially Autumn now. Yesterday I had gone to the Big E fair in Springfield, MA and ate pounds and pounds of deep-fried things that I never should have eaten. But at least I washed it all down with beer and cider.

Mowed some lawn which is surprisingly still lush and green for this time of year. Some leaves are falling but not many.

But what I did mostly was look up at the deep blue skies where I saw plane after plane passing overhead at 35,000 feet. Skies are so clear that I can make out the entire plane with the naked eye and white contrails flowing behind it. These planes are 7 miles up in the air!

Now I'm in the flight path sometimes for LaGuardia and those planes are usually about 15,000 feet up with no contrails but I pretty much know where they are going. Also get some local traffic to the smaller private plane airstrips in the area. But I never realized there was so much action at 35,000 feet.

I often wonder where those planes are going. And where they are coming from. And who is up on those planes? Might be long forgotten about friends and family members. Might be a celebrity like Pat Benatar or Bobby Orr, the hockey player. Who knows who is up there in those airplanes just 7 miles over my house? Could be anybody, right?

I fly often myself and like to get the window seat where I can gaze down at the ribbons of highway from 35,000 feet up, trying to make out landmarks and such. Hard to do at such heights but every now and then, I'm able to pick out something that I recognize like the skyline of Charlotte, NC or one of the Great Lakes in the midwest. It's fun to look down from that height. Especially when I'm coming over the Rocky Mountains on an intercontinental trip or flying to Hawaii in which I like to be the first one to spot the tiny islands way off in the distance.

But anyhow, I wish there was a way I could figure out information about those airplanes flying so high over my house.

I remember when non-ticketed passengers could go right to the gate. There was perfunctory metal detectors you had to walk through due to the early 1970s hijackers, but I often go through them without even breaking stride.

My wife-to-be met me at the gate when I returned from the Marines. She really pissed off my mother because she sort of elbowed her to the side and got to me first - that's when I figured I should marry her.

My only close encounter with a celebrity, sort of, on a plane was Ted Kennedy, of all people. I was taking my young kids to Washington to see all the landmarks and on the way back, I treated them to first class seating. When the stewardess told me that Ted Kennedy was sitting in the very seat I was in on the way down, I wanted to change seats so fast!

I did over two and a half million miles. You’re right...it was fun.

Not any more. My disenchantment with flying started in ‘93 with a duke out with TSA. I started flying less and less and finally only overseas.

Haven’t been on a plane since 2012 and never plan to set foot on one again.

"Wow, that must be Connecticut down there. Starting to change color. Looks like a gorgeous day, there's a guy sitting on his deck there, with his drink and his phone, wonder what he does for a living, how his life is going... How I wish there were some way to let him know I'm thinking of him, from way up here, even though I don't even know him..."

Airplane travel is so safe. Being in the air is probably the one time I don't worry about anything. On a recent trip to Atlanta from New York, I was more worried about the crazy taxi drivers in New York and navigating the Atlanta highways in my rental than when I was up in the air.

In fact, if I could find a way to just stay on airplanes all the time, I would probably live to my maximum life span.

We are on a flight path out of JFK in CT.

Sometimes I see a massive A380 overhead about 15,000 feet climbing

No other engines make the sound of an A380, even up that high.

Low roar straining under massive weight. Heavies very long haul.

I was on a flight with Mary Ann Mobley, Miss America 1959.
This was around 1980, twenty years after her coronation.

The skin on her face was so wrinkled, she looked like a pink cantaloupe.

Downloaded it ($4.95). My first identification was evidently a plane carrying the NY Nets basketball team. Does that make sense? It’s not even basketball season yet.

Always liked Pat Benatar. Don’t know her political views but probably don’t want to know. Anyway, she lives in Hawaii and I remember spending an afternoon with a very perplexed wife trying to find her home on Maui. It all ended well, my wife and I found a secluded beach and took most of our clothes off while watching the sunset.

Living under one of the important corridors between East Coast airports and Europe we see many such planes overhead...heading east *and* west. That could mean that they're heading to Europe (in the evening) or toward US airports in the afternoon.

So they're likely to be 777's,A330's,A350's,A380's,787's and 747's.

Just FYI...there's a website called "flightradar24.com" that costs about $10 a year.Lots of fun stuff to be seen if you have free time and $10 that's burning a hole in your pocket.
