Specifically, the rider would curb the ability of the Federal Trade Commission to investigate whether MLMs like Amway are pyramid schemes potentially protecting Amway from costly regulations that have recently ensnared its archrival Herbalife.

Maybe you could have provided less information, so we could have less of a clue of what you are talking about.
It seems clear to me. Maybe because I read most of the article, though. But on its own, curbing the FTC’s ability to investigate pyramid schemes can’t be a good thing.
AMWAY IS A PYRAMID SCHEME.
Scamway
When does the Swamp draining begin?????
One vague sentence.
Why bother posting this?
Here’s some more.
Betsy DeVos well-connected family wants Amway to get a leg up on Herbalife and its pushing Congress to make it happen.
The US education secretarys Michigan-based family, which is the controlling shareholder of privately held Amway, is backing a little-noticed amendment to the US House spending bill that would limit regulatory oversight of so-called multilevel marketers, or MLMs.
I suspect it is a pyramid scheme, but I don’t really care as long as I can buy their topnotch carpet cleaning stuff.
If it’s a pyramid scheme, it’s an amazingly long lived one. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t miss being stalked in grocery stores and the like. It got so bad in the 80’s I actually started asking them “are you gay or schlepping Amway?” But, multilevel marketing appears not to be a pure pyramid scheme. There are plenty of legitimate companies operating under this model. It stands to reason that DeVos would attempt to lobby in favor of the family business, but such activities need to be publicly disclosed. The cumulative effect of so much inside baseball over the years is very distorting and leads to the sort of legal convolution that we have today.
A a citizen of their hometown, that has received billions in philanthropy from their business....I can only ask you to download a brochure and consider how you, your friends, and family too can become rich from selling many fine Amway products without any major costs to yourself!
:)
All the extravagance and incompetence of our present Government is due, in the main, to lawyers, and, in part at least, to good ones. They are responsible for nine-tenths of the useless and vicious laws that now clutter the statute-books, and for all the evils that go with the vain attempt to enforce them. Every Federal judge is a lawyer. So are most Congressmen. Every invasion of the plain rights of the citizens has a lawyer behind it.

I seem to remember my fully committed Baptist aunt selling Amway cleaning products back in the 60s. My impression was a Christian owned company that could make you rich beyond your wildest dreams if you worked it.
Not right. Amway AND Herbalife are both pyramid schemes.
Instead of drying up cesspools I see only a deep, water-filled swamp with gators stacked up 6 high and police tape everywhere warning the innocent or concerned to stay away. Time to blast and fill.
I think so, too. To hamper Herbal-lite, whatever it’s called, as a result of investigations and then to terminate the ability of the FTC to make any investigation of Amway is not right. And to have a cabinet secretary’s family behind it smacks of in-your-face crony capitalism if not corruption.
Does anyone even sell Scamway anymore?
Back in 1980 I went to an Amway meeting. I didn’t buy anything. The best score was a sales kit and a live-in nymphomaniac! Best deal of a 24-year-olds life time!
