A woman in Miami delivered her own baby on Sunday after a dispatcher talked her through the process when Hurricane Irma prevented paramedics from reaching the new mother.
The woman was in her home in the Little Haiti neighborhood when she went into labor and called 911 for help, the city of Miami said in a tweet on Sunday. Paramedics weren’t able to reach the expectant mother due to hurricane-force winds and dangerous conditions as Irma approached southern Florida.
“We weren't able to respond. So she delivered the placenta, also. Dispatch told her how to tie it off. She's stable at home,” Assistant Fire Chief Eloy Garcia told the Miami Herald. "We made contact with the assistant medical director here. Talked things through."
Doctors at Jackson Health System went on the phone and coached the woman through the birth.

There was a guy who took his family to safety, but when it was time for him to go he couldn't get any gas, because the gas stations had ran out. So he had no other choice than to stay and ride out the storm

We seem to have forgotten that up until the 50’s most babies were born at home with the assistance of only a lay midwife.
I was reacting to the fact that a lot of blame has been placed on this mother ("someone who refused to leave to protect themselves") when actually we don't know anything about her situation. For all we know, she's been single-handedly heroically evacuating everybody in her church choir in her 2003 Ford F150 SuperCrew Cab all week, and it tragically broke down just as she was at 2 cm and ready to take off to save herself and babykin.
Fantasy Land, I know. But we're all speculating.
You have another good point, that she might not even know who BabyDaddy I. M. Outtahere IS, or want his assistance.
I brought up my point because all who are playing critic have been criticizing her, and no mention of the person of the masculine persuasion who is supposed to be the Protect and Provide part of the partnership.
If a guy has not stepped up as he should, I certainly agree he is partly to blame, but not isolated to this either. He is to blame on other levels too.
I didn't mention a guy with my criticism, because IMO she could have gotten to an evacuation center on her own.
Just contacting the authorities should have gotten her delivered to such a place. Most areas have shuttles for emergencies, and it wouldn't surprise me if volunteers weren't augmenting this. You could call just about any church and a parishioner could be found to provide a simple ride.

Perhaps one day, discarded placenta can be used to supply stem cells for new organ growth. The timing would have to be precise.
