Woman delivers her own baby during Hurricane Irma in Miami

A woman in Miami delivered her own baby on Sunday after a dispatcher talked her through the process when Hurricane Irma prevented paramedics from reaching the new mother.

The woman was in her home in the Little Haiti neighborhood when she went into labor and called 911 for help, the city of Miami said in a tweet on Sunday. Paramedics weren’t able to reach the expectant mother due to hurricane-force winds and dangerous conditions as Irma approached southern Florida.

“We weren't able to respond. So she delivered the placenta, also. Dispatch told her how to tie it off. She's stable at home,” Assistant Fire Chief Eloy Garcia told the Miami Herald. "We made contact with the assistant medical director here. Talked things through."

Doctors at Jackson Health System went on the phone and coached the woman through the birth.

Maybe she tried and missed the bus, then tried again and missed the boat. Nine months pregnant ladies are neither quick, strong, nor agile.

If I'm gonna be mad at somebody, I think I'll aim my ire at the AWOL daddy, Mr. I. M. Outtahere. The male of the species is supposed to protect the Little Lady and the younglings. That's why God made men so big and strong. Testosterone: it's there for a reason.

While I do understand your thought on the male, the proliferation of the females searching for one night stands to gain that magnificent [by perception only] ability to get more freedom like men, leaves men pretty much out of the picture.

She may not know a single thing about the baby daddy.

The guy may live in Colorado, have been in Florida for only one night, and may not even have his name still in that woman’s empty head.

Of course this is only a possibility, much like the one you raised to put the blame on the man.

Arrest her for child abuse. Place the baby up for adoption.

I empathize with the woman, having borne several babies myself. As billions of mothers and fathers know, childbirth can be a bit of a nervewracking experience, especially the first child.

But this kind of headline always makes me laugh. Women deliver their own babies (unless you're talking about a Caesarian section).

About 90% of the time, a mother delivering a baby without professional help will ultimately do just fine. Having a doctor yank a baby out of an over-anesthetized mother, using forceps, is often much worse for mother and baby than an unplanned home birth.

Yes of course it's better to have an experienced midwife than to deliver alone. But hospital births have their own unexpected risks.

I’m used to living in remote areas where there are nurse-midwives who are in the business of doing deliveries where there are no problems predicted at home or at one of the birthing centers in the nearby towns-birthing center is a bit more expensive, but either is a fraction of what a hospital charges.

So I’m not all that amazed that the woman gave birth successfully at home with someone on the phone who knew how to coach her through successfully. As you pointed out, it IS what women were designed to do-and midwives have been around a lot longer than hospitals.

The stress of being in the hurricane also might have brought that woman’s labor on before her due date, too-I was with my mom, an aunt and several cousins in CC in hurricane Celia-one cousin was 8 months pregnant, her husband in the Navy and at sea-even though the women present had a lot of experience with that sort of thing-my aunt had her last 4 kids at home with a midwife in attendance-you can bet your ass we were keeping my cousin calm so she wouldn’t be giving birth in a hurricane...

Good for this woman for having the presence of mind and the calm to be coached through...

Amen to that-my natural living country family preached Lamaze classes and natural birth as the safest way-worked fine for me...

I’m going to guess that you are a guy, and so have not carried or given birth to a baby...

Having a baby at home has nothing to do with “child abuse”, whether it is planned that way or not-a baby is carried by his/her mom-it is not up to anyone else-except maybe the father to even discuss where mom chooses to give birth-kids belong to their parents, not some nanny state...

People such as this woman are not in our country because they are intelligent. Most are here to cash in on freebies.

All she had to do was call police they would have helped her to a shelter. She needed to do it early. She chose not to. Plus where’s the dad?

Plus where’s the dad?

exactly ... or her family ? Sounds like she went into labor after police/fire services were stopped. Storm stress, not being able to find family help she was counting on. Who knows.
