No real maternity wards in Haiti

None in Miami? Did you read the article?
I’m used to living in remote areas where there are nurse-midwives who are in the business of doing deliveries where there are no problems predicted at home or at one of the birthing centers in the nearby towns-birthing center is a bit more expensive, but either is a fraction of what a hospital charges.
So I’m not all that amazed that the woman gave birth successfully at home with someone on the phone who knew how to coach her through successfully. As you pointed out, it IS what women were designed to do-and midwives have been around a lot longer than hospitals.
The stress of being in the hurricane also might have brought that woman’s labor on before her due date, too-I was with my mom, an aunt and several cousins in CC in hurricane Celia-one cousin was 8 months pregnant, her husband in the Navy and at sea-even though the women present had a lot of experience with that sort of thing-my aunt had her last 4 kids at home with a midwife in attendance-you can bet your ass we were keeping my cousin calm so she wouldn’t be giving birth in a hurricane...
Good for this woman for having the presence of mind and the calm to be coached through...
