Russian president Vladimir Putin has joined the war of words concerning the international race to develop artificial intelligence. Speaking to students last Friday, Putin predicted that whichever country leads the way in AI research will come to dominate global affairs.
“Artificial intelligence is the future, not only for Russia, but for all humankind,” said Putin, reports RT. “It comes with colossal opportunities, but also threats that are difficult to predict. Whoever becomes the leader in this sphere will become the ruler of the world.”
The development of artificial intelligence has increasingly become a national security concern in recent years. It is China and the US (not Russia) which are seen as the two frontrunners, with China recently announcing its ambition to become the global leader in AI research by 2030. Many analysts warn that America is in danger of falling behind, especially as the Trump administration prepares to cut funding for basic science and technology research.
Although it’s thought that artificial intelligence will help boost countries’ economies in a number of areas, from heavy industry to medical research, AI technology will also be useful in warfare. Artificial intelligence can be used to develop cyber weapons, and control autonomous tools like drone swarms — fleets of low-cost quadcopters with a shared ‘brain’ that can be used for surveillance as well as attacking opponents.
Both China and the US are currently researching this technology, and in his speech on Friday, Putin predicted that future wars would be fought by countries using drones. “When one party's drones are destroyed by drones of another, it will have no other choice but to surrender,” said the Russian president, according to the Associated Press.

This has been in the public domain for a very long time. Although we are getting close to “The Singularity” target date of 2029. It’s good to see people like Musk and Putin talking to the public about it.
Check this article out from April 1st, 2001. It’s very reliant to what we see now.

She can rock my cradle.
Real intelligence is pretty much Artificial today.
Haha!
Always have been attracted to Rebecca De Mornay.
Rebecca can rock my world anytime!
AI, for all the anthroporphizing we impute on it, is nothing more than data searching & reporting.
The nation that rules magnetism rules outer space.
Or something like that.
Good to know. I'll ask her to stop calling me, and to call you.
And, whoever masters manned space travel will rule. Whoever it is, our grandkids will be working for them.
Haha!
He who controls The Spice...
On a train...
I was about 35 years into my IT career when it dawned on me: I get up in the morning, go to work, feed my servers, make sure they have enough power and cooling and network access, tune their performance, get rid of clogs, soothe runaway processes, and I'm wondering what it will be like to slave for an AI in the future? Dude, the Singularity happened twenty years ago. And the sign of an intelligence superior to ours is that nobody noticed.
It is undoubtedly true in an economic sense — if you can build a true AI, pair it with agile robotics, you’ll have (effectively) infinite services and manufacturing capacity at a cost of the unit’s depreciation and energy — anything which doesn’t rely upon absolutely rare commodities (not just ones that are expensive now because of production costs) will start out cheap and quickly become essentially free at the scale of individual consumption.
If one company, or country, or an oligopoly of them, controls the technology, anyone outside the sphere of control has instantly lost almost all the value of their productive capacity (be it labor or industry) and most (if not necessarily almost all) of their other assets, too ... not good.
I hear what you are saying. Nevertheless, the Singularity is about physically, biologically and chemically merging with the machines.
Of course it will start with “Trans-humanism”. Now you know why they are selling us Transsexuals now. It has nothing to do with the elite concern with the less than 1/1000 of 1 percent of the public. It’s about cyborgs (like the 70s TV show Six Million Dollar Man) which is introduced through prosthetics that we see with troops coming back from the Middle East, etc..., and finally the Singularity. That’s the elite’s game plan.
This is no different than the rhetoric accompanying the onset of the Industrial Revolution. Life got better
Machines don’t need to breath air. They are ideal for the environment of space. Machines that can self replicate and can produce goods on demand will make the Industrial revolution look like a tiny improvement.
As a cyborg, I am concerned about your tone & innuendo.
